"This pizza place is bitching!" said Nate with a slice hanging from his mouth. "Really? Are you enjoying it?" asked Julian with a bitter tone. We were on a break at a pizza place not too far from the building. It wasn't that packed, surprisingly, so we were eating in peace. Nate keeps taking most of the pizza to himself, and Julian seems this close to punching him in the face. I, on the other hand, was killing time, aimlessly scrolling through good ol' Instagram. I don't even follow anyone, but I have to admit, it comes in handy when idle. A glance at the time while the page was refreshing, made me realize that our break was overdue. "I think we should go back; we're already late,"
"Late?" Nate replied, "We don't answer to no one Y/N why should w—" My phone started to ring, and a smirk came to my face when I saw the caller ID. I picked up the phone and said, "Oh, hey Josh," Nate's face dropped, "Yeah, we were just about to come back, but Nate was sayi—" Before I could finish, Nate snatched the phone from my hand, and Julian took snatched the pizza box from his. Nate cleared his throat and said with a sorry tone, "Hey bro," "No, don't listen to him he's just fucking around," "Of course, I want to keep my company privileges," "Yeah, we'll be there in 10 tops," then he hanged the phone.
We spent a few minutes trying to hustle a taxi then opted to walk there instead. Well, Julian and I did; Nate decided to run cause he "wanted to burn the pizza fat." It took me and Josh 15 minutes of comfortably silent walking and pizza eating to reach the building and another 15 admiring the giant. 18 stories and with a big sign at the very top reading, Epsilon Consulting LLC. If people didn't know any better, they wouldn't think we were employed here, let alone own it. "Can you believe it has only been a year?" Julian asked, "No, I can't. Can you believe that Josh came up with the name while he was high, and we went with it?" He chuckled, "We should get in."
The security at the entrance ushered us in, giving a respectful nod to both of us — more so to Josh cause of his HR position. The staff slightly straightened up as we walked past them, like always. I'd say to Julian that they were scared of him, but he would always brush me off and say that they liked him, which was true. When we got to the boardroom, Josh was sitting on the big boss chair, and Nate was practically dead on the chair to his left.
"Took you long enough. Thought you guys stole a car and rode off into the sunset," Julian tried to look surprised at Josh's comment. He put his hand dramatically to his chest and said, "How could I ever do that, Josh? You know my heart only belongs to you." Josh didn't have a rebuttal this time and simply continued,
"Sit, we don't have much to go through — not now at least. Just wanted you guys to catch me up before the board meeting next week, then we'll go out for drinks," Julian took a seat and put his feet on the glass table. He sighed and said, "What are they going do anyway? The patent is still in our hands, so why are we even still dealing with this bs?"
Josh rubbed his temple, "Three years, the contract said 3 years till we are independent. At least we aren't being held with a leash around our necks like Kaleb and his girlfriend," That earned a collective chuckle from every one of us." He smiled, seeming more relaxed, then said, "Now, catch me up please. JayJay?"
Julian rolled his eyes at the nickname, "Nothing new from last time," He said behind his phone, "Everyone seems to be satisfied, and the new people we had transferred to Y/N's unit seem to be fitting in well," "Yeah, they like it," I said, "Apparently, the work environment back in the main company is worse than Amazon," Josh chuckled.
