"You think I overdressed?" Y/N asked, "Dude, you're wearing a shirt. You looking just fine," he sighed and put his head on the steering wheel, "Is there anything that I need to look out for?" he mumbled, "You already met mom, dad might be a little harsh, but you're dating his daughter, so that's a you thing. Now let's get in. It's getting cold." I got out of the car, he trailed behind, fixing his shirt and sweater interchangeably. We didn't even need to knock. Mom opened the door and greeted us with a smile, "You were watching through the window, weren't you?" She scoffed amidst hugging me, "What made you say that?" she let go of me and set her eyes on Y/N. She hugged him, cleaned the non-existent dust off his shoulder, and said, "Beige seems to be your color, Y/N," he smiled, "Thanks Maggie," "Get in. Patrick is in the living room. He should keep you both company till Billie and I finish making the food,"

Mom hurried back to the kitchen. I could smell something burning from there. Billie probably fucked up something. I smiled; it sure is the family dinner.

We got into the living room. Dad was watching TV with a brooding expression on his face. "This is going to be interesting," He noticed that we were here, got up, and gave me a handshake. He seemed to be doubling down on the act as he shook Y/N's hand. "You have a weak grip. You don't exercise?" he asked, "Uh...not really. Usually don't have the time for it," Y/N laughed, but it died down as he saw dad's expression didn't change. "Dude, could you get us something from the kitchen?" "Gladly," he replied and ran away to the kitchen.

I chuckled then sat on the couch. We watched TV in silence for a couple of minutes, then I turned to him, " Exercise? Really dad?" He dropped the brooding expression for a lost one, "I don't know. I thought it'd be intimidating, wasn't it?" I scoffed, "You don't need to do that with him. He's different. He's better than the last ones. He's a good guy," "I doubt that," he replied, "It's always good to keep your guard up in this lifestyle, but enough of that. First, give me that hug," He gave me a proper hug and continued, "How's my son doing? You two don't come here as often as you used to. You less often than her," "C'mon, I come here at least twice a week, and she more or less lives here even though she has a house. Don't be dramatic," We shared a small laugh, and I continued, "I'm doing good. Things are solid with Claudia, and work is going well too," He nodded, "And your thing?" he asked. I unintentionally chuckled, "That is going well too," I replied, "I haven't done anything in a while," He smiled, "It takes a lot of strength to try to quit," he said, "Though know that we love you either way alright?" "Of course, dad."

We watched more TV to fill in the gaps, then he turned to the kitchen, "You think he'll come back?" he asked, "Nope. You probably scared the poor dude. I bet he won't come out till they serve dinner," "Shit. Shouldn't have overdone it," "Told ya'." Seemed like I was right cause the next time I saw Y/N was when he came out of the kitchen with Mom and Billie, carrying the plates. Dad and I went to wash our hands when we got back, the three of them had already finished setting up the whole table and made it look like a thanksgiving feast. Dad and I sat in front of the two while mom took the big chair. "Wow," dad said, "Did all of you make this," "Yeah, Y/N helped too," she put her hand on Y/N, and he had a forced smile on his face. Dad nodded, "Well, I'm impressed. Loosen up Y/N. Didn't mean to scare you earlier. I don't get to be the overprotective dad a lot these days," Y/N smiled, more naturally this time, "It's ok Mr. O'Connel—" "Patrick is alright," Y/N nodded, "It's alright Patrick, I haven't gotten to be on the receiving end of these things in a while too,"

"Alright alright. Let's start eating before the food gets any colder," In a few minutes, the turkey was already gone, split between everyone not so equally. "So, when are you boys planning on going back to New York?" asked mom. Y/N swallowed his food and replied, "Not sure. Josh and Nate are usually the ones who decide where we are going. Either way, I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon," I exchanged a glance with Billie, she tried to hide her smile with more food, "And what do you do exactly? I haven't gotten that part of the story yet,"

Y/N paused a moment, seemingly thinking of an answer, "The simplest way I could put it is that we're a glorified stock prediction unit. We get hired by the big companies and investors, and we predict stocks and get a share of the profit," "So you're the new kids in the block that are shaking up the market?" Y/N chuckled, "The other three are. I just tagged along for the ride, really," "Either way, you must be well of by now," Y/N added the remaining bit of gravy to his plate and replied, "Technically, yeah. But I usually give it away. Mansions and expensive cars scare me off for some reason," "You don't sound like a Wall Street kid," dad said with a mile. Y/N smiled back, "I'm barely a Wall Street kid."

Y/N took the last bite of his plate while we were barely beginning. Mom switched to her mom mode, "Aren't you going to take more? You barely ate anything Y/N," He got up with his empty plate, "No, it's alright. I don't eat heavy in the evenings. If I do, my acid reflux will fuck me up," Mom let out an oh then he went to put the plate in the kitchen.

"Cursing in front of the parents. He must be getting comfortable. You're setting a bad example, Billie," "Oh fuck off, dad. That's the point, isn't it?" Before he could reply to her, Y/N came out with an extra refill of gravy for us and sat down. Mom cleared her throat, "Y/N, Billie told us that you're from Oregon," Y/N turned to Billie, "Did she now?" "Yeah, tell us about it? Always wanted to go there myself, but things never lined up," mom laughed, but he didn't reciprocate. "I don't remember much of it, honestly. I moved out of there at a young age. But I did see it in magazines, and it is worth visiting," "You sure you don't remember anything about it?" Dad asked without looking off his plate, "Positive."

The tension slipped in out of nowhere. The silence followed it. Y/N got up to take a call. Billie looked agitated, "I told you that was a sensitive topic, mom. What the hell!" "I'm sorry," mom defended herself fast, "I thought he felt more at home now," "What's so sensitive about talking from where he came from?" Dad asked. Billie didn't reply but got up and went outside to Y/N. I sighed and gave mom a reassuring smile, "I'll get to it. Probably need to calm her down before she makes him anxious," Mom smiled at me while dad was still on his food.

I went outside. Billie was a couple of steps ahead of me but frozen where she stood. Y/N was sitting on the pavement, staring at a photo on his phone. I shook Billie out of her state as I went past her. She gasped, and Y/N got up. "W-what's wrong?" she asked. He turned his phone to us, showing the blonde man in the picture. "Who's that?" I asked, "That's Kaleb, Josh's brother," he replied in a dead tone, "It was taken in my neighborhood, the one in New Port. A close friend caught him asking around about me then called to tell me," I scoffed unintentionally, "And why would this Kaleb do that," He didn't reply. He slowly made his way to Billie and hugged her tight. "What happened?" She looked as confused as I was but hugged him back. "Something is going to go terribly wrong a-and I don't know what to do," she was taken back as I was, but reacted quickly, soothing him while repeating, "It's going to be ok,"

I took out my phone and dialed Josh's number. Something about this made me severely uncomfortable.
