12:40 PM  PST

The car engine roared as I hit the accelerator. I could see the building in my sight.

"You trying to kill us before we complete the mission?" Josh's voice rang through the earpiece

"The speed is a bit calming," I said,

"He's not wrong," Helen said from my side

"No need to be too stressed about this. Simple get in and get out. Everything should go as planned if you go as planned,"

I sighed as I slowed down near the building.

"Alright, Josh, we'll be going silent now," Helen said

"You don't need to risk your lives for this. If you need to back out at any moment, do so. Stay safe."

Light static, and his voice was gone.

I turned off the engine and took out the keys.

"Here," I said, "A copy of the car keys in case anything happens,"

"Nothing will happen," she said,

"I know ,but in case,"

She sighed and put them in her purse. We got out of the car and then paused at the entrance.

"Alright, you two, it's go time,"

We went into the building. The security guards flinching when catching sight of us. We split on the ground floor, she to the record office, and I to the elevator.

"Good luck," she said,

"You too,"

I got to the elevator. I took a deep breath, tried to calm my nerves, and before I knew it, I was already on the top floor. His office was waiting in front of me. I gave the door a slight nudge then it opened.

"He doesn't even bother to lock his door,"

I picked one book out from the shelf and started reading.

Light Static and Josh was back on.

"There should be a couple of cameras on you by now. Be careful,"

I took out the bookmark from my pocket, made sure the mic was out then—

"Kaleb, what are you doing?"

I stopped instantly and turned to the door.

"Father?"

"Helen," Josh said, "Kaleb met him earlier than we thought. Finish up and get out of there fast,"

Both of us waited for the confirmation signal from her, but nothing came. Soon enough, Josh's voice cut out too.

"Kaleb didn't expect you to be back this early,"

"I had some other business to take care of," I said.

"I heard. Congratulations on the wedding. Always knew you two were two peas in a pod,"

He sat down in front of me and then smiled.

"The chair suits you," he said,

"I don't think so, I don't have the gravitas for it,"

I stood up as I was about to leave. He stayed silent till I was at the door.

"Do you know how most kings fall, Kaleb?"

"Excuse me?"

"Do you know how most kings fall? An empire, a king, truly falls from the inside, not from external war. A traitorous diplomat, greedy relatives, naïve sons?"
