IGOR BERG
"No matter what you see, do not speak one word."
Those were his orders after learning his entire double life had been exposed. Each individual act of treason was laid before him moments after he was pulled from his own grave.
He was warned to never contact his kids or Kara. Worst of all, he was instructed to act like Elaine never existed. That was only part of his punishment. It was a life sentence he had no hope of getting out of.
"We had every right to execute you for your betrayal. Had it not been for the benevolence of our leaders, rigor-mortis would have already set in on you. Once we learned of your wife's plan to have you assassinated, we decided it was prudent to close this door of your life and silence all who were involved."
A headache the size of Texas settled right behind his eyes. Not sure if he had been deprived of oxygen too long, a ball of tension building in his intestines spoke of some other agent working against him.
Igor's mouth began to water with sweat pooling across his trembling top lip. The all too familiar outward expressions led him to one other conclusion. He was about to puke and it was gonna be a doozy.
On his knees, he bent over with his hands planted flat of the ground for support. Every muscle in his body clenched at the same time as he began to hurl violently. The sour acidic smell of the contents forcibly ejected from his stomach seemed to spew for an eternity.
In reality, only four or five minutes elapsed as his body responded to the side affects of a drug that was administered to place him in a deep nearly breathless sleep combined with the antidote that forced him back into the world of the living.
"We can't afford to dispose of a man with your skillset. However, allowing you to walk around freely in the presence of your brothers after your indiscretions have been exposed will negatively impact our Cause."
Igor tenuously held his breath unsure of the direction in which they were headed with this montage. He always knew the consequences of getting caught. His biggest problem was that he believed himself to be smarter than everyone else.
"You will be reassigned without the protection of the Brotherhood. The way you live your life out there will be left up to you since you will no longer be affiliated with us. However..."
That word—however—was as loaded as a double barrel shotgun.
"We will call on you from time to time to repay the gift we are so graciously bestowing upon you."
"What gift is that?" He waited on bated breath not sure how the stranger he had never before seen in his life would respond.
"That would be the gift of your miserable life. Instead of killing you, you will provide us with necessary services from time to time and if you get caught, you speak... you die. Besides, the two people who know everything about Us and you will disappear the same day you decide to open your mouth. And I can assure you, there will be no gift of life or reassignment for them. Their bodies will fill unmarked graves. I'm sure you could care less about your deceptive little wife, but that tasty black vixen of yours will turn into a stinky bloated corpse and no one will know her whereabouts except maybe a pack of coyotes when they smell her stench."
