Chapter 22

I stroked her hand as I sat next to an unconscious Emily on the hospital bed.

"Here, eat something." Said Raymond as he entered the hospital room with a paper bag in his hand.

"I'm not hungry." I said to him.

He walked towards me and left the paper bag on the table next to the door.

Sitting next to me, he held my hand and said "You need to eat."

I shook my head. In these past weeks I've grown so attached to this bundle of sunshine that I don't know what I will do without her.

With a horrifying past and present she seems to be so happy and joyful.

"Let's go for a walk. They'll call us first thing if she wakes up." He said.

I was hesitant at first but then I stood up, I took his hand in mine and walked outside into the open.

"What happened to the meeting you were gonna have?" I ask.

"I postponed it. You need me. You haven't left her side in so long. I'm worried." He said.

"She reminds me of someone." I said, with a sad smile as I looked at the footpath beneath us.

"Who?" He asked, his gaze burning through me.

"My sister. She was her age." I said.

"Where is she?" He asked.

"She's dead." I said, my voice toneless.

The sadness in me just worsened.

"She's been unconscious for a week." I said in a weak voice as I looked up at Raymond, standing on the other side of her bed.

"I know. It won't be long until she wakes up." He said as he made his way towards the chair I was sitting in and sat on the other chair next to it.

"You know she has no one?" I ask.

"She has us." He said and held on to my hand that wasn't holding on to Emily's.

"I want to adopt her.. I think I might." I said, I didn't realise that it was out loud until I felt his piercing gaze on me.

A few minutes later when I just kept staring at Emily looking for any kind of movement, he squeezed my hand as a reply.

"Her breathing picked up." He said, startling me in the process.

"What?" I ask.

"She's waking up." He said.

"Are you sure she's okay?" I ask the doctor who was about to leave the room again.

"Yes, Luna. She's perfectly alright." He said with a polite smile.

"Good." Said Raymond in his usual -I hate you so shut up- tone.

"Are you doing fine sweetie?" I asked Emily who just smiled and nodded.

"She's not talking. She nodded. She's not fine. Raymond call the doctor. She's not fine." I started pacing around the room.

I was cut off when Raymond grabbed my shoulders.

"Jessica. Breathe." He said.

My eyes widened as I realised how over protective I was acting.

"Sorry.." I said sheepishly.

"She's asleep again and completely fine. Let's go get lunch." Raymond said as he grabbed my shoulders as I stood up.

"Okay." I said and we went out of the room.

"Mommy! Mommy! I want to go into that room! It smells so good!!" We heard a child say as he pointed in the direction of Emily's room.

With my eyebrows furrowed, I walked towards the boy and kneeled down to his height.

"Which room do you want to go to?" I ask.

"That room." he says pointing in the direction of Emily's room.

"May I?" I ask his mother.

She nods but her eyes widen as Raymond walks up to behind me.

"Luna Maxwell!" He says with surprise.

"Alpha." she said.

"He wants to go to Emily's room." I say to Raymond.

"I'll come with you." He said and turned around towards her room.

I slipped my hand into his and blushed when I felt him look at me.

"This is preposterous!" Shouted the boy's mother, Luna Maxwell. "How dare you touch an aplpha? You are not his mate. I knew you were a whore the moment I saw you."

She was cut off when Raymond growled. His grip on my hand tightened.

"How dare you disrespect my mate?" He asked in a menacing tone.

"Raymond." I said in calm tone that seemed to warn him at the same time. "He might be her mate. We need him. Remember?"

He sighed and grabbed my waist tightly.

"Cmon lets go." I said to the boy as he grabbed the hand I offered him.

With Raymond still fuming we walked into Emily's room.

He ran up to the little girl on the bed and whispered something that was barely audible.

"What did he just say?" I asked and turned to face a wide eyed Raymond.

"He said mate."
