a lone wooden chair
•··············•·············•
The seven girls stood in a line watching the house that stood before them. They were going to start living here now.
It was in a nice place, not too far away from civilization, a relatively quite place, with very few neighbours and the backyard was just occupied by tall, lively trees.
Aaliyah, the third oldest of the group, took the first step on the walkway up to the front door, her friends following closely behind.
The keys jingling as the girl placed them in the slot, unlocking the door and entering the warm atmosphere.
The house was spacious, well considering that there was seven of them they'd need a lot of space, and gave off a homey feeling.
Quickly they all looked around, checking each others bedrooms, and discussing how they'd decorate.
And then an unsettling atmosphere fell amongst the friends.
"Okay wait. Why is there just a random chair in the forest?" Zada asked, her tone changing.
The six friends looked at her with a confused look adorning their features. This causes Zada to point out to the balcony, facing the forest at the back of their new house.
They all gather on the balcony, curious and a bit unnerved at the sight that met their eyes. A cold breeze graced their faces, goosebumps decorated their skin as they look at the lone, wooden chair sitting between the two trees, facing away from their house.
Their stomach felt heavier the longer they stared, their subconsciousness nagging at them, telling them that something is very off.
"What the hell?" spoke Chanté, breaking the silence amongst them.
"Welp, guess I'm not sleeping tonight." chimed Akeira.
"Gonna pretend I didn't see this. Umm Zada, good luck sleeping tonight. Hope you don't get possessed." Tonique lightly laughed, patting her friend on the shoulder before heading back inside.
"You wanna switch rooms with me?" Aaliyah asked, worried if her friend would be alright sleeping in the room with the most unsettling view.
"No, it's alright. Even though I know for sure I'm going to be seeing things." she replied, mumbling the last sentence with her accent slipping out.
One by one they left the balcony, muttering a few things to themselves, such as 'praying for sure tonight'.
They all gathered in the kitchen, munching on snacks and sharing a few funny moments.
Seconds turned to minutes, which turned to hours. The stars splattered across the midnight blue sky, the full moon glowing, lending the Earth a bit of its light, the crickets singing and the fireflies dancing around the bushes and in-between the trees.
Light chatter filled the air along with the sound of swords clashing, which vibrated from the TV. The seven girls had now gathered in the living room, occupying the furniture as they had a show marathon.
Soon enough yawns left them, signifying their tiredness growing each minute from all the packing they had done.
Agreeing that they'd finish the show another time, Tricia shuts the TV off and everyone dispersed into their rooms, settling into their comfy beds.
However, this was the moment Zada dreaded most. The soft padding of her feet against the wood flooring and the near silent click of the the door, now confirmed to her that she was alone in her room.
Avoiding absolutely any eye contact with the sliding glass door that lead to the balcony and what lies beyond, the girl climbed into her bed.
She plugged her phone into the socket to charge and let herself relax into the comfort of her cozy blanket.
All negative thoughts leaving as soon as her eyelids closed on their own, heavy from the tiredness she was currently experiencing. And soon enough, complete silence filled the house.
But the soft snapping of twigs and the rustling of bushes softly filled the air outside. Glowing red eyes peeking through the bushes watching with hunger.
