She was surprised when she opened the door and found her husband and his mother in a deep discussion, they didn't seem to notice her presence. She greeted both to draw their attention. They both answered her after sometime, the atmosphere was tense so she dropped her peace offering on the table and excused herself to freshen up. In the bathroom she took longer than necessary, whatever her mother inlaw had to say was really serious.
She finally exit the bathroom when she knew she couldn't hide no longer. She went out to the kitchen and found out dinner was already set. She thanked her mother inlaw and asked her why she had not called her to help out. Her question was ignored much to her dismay. She ate quietly, her favorite vegetable soup didn't look appealing to her but she forced herself to eat so as not to offend the older lady. After dinner, she cleared the table and did the dishes while mother and son watched TV in the sitting room.
Her mother in-law signalled her to accompany her to the guest room. She knew it was time for the discussion she had been dreading. Slowly she walked with the older lady while bracing herself for what was to come. She felt like a teenager about to have the infamous 'talk' with her mother.
She walked into the room after the older lady and closed the door. She sat on one of the furnitures in the room and listened as the older lady immediately started speaking the moment the door was closed.
"Sandra my daughter, your marriage is almost three years and we are yet to see any sign that a married couple lives here. Is it that my son is not a man or you are not a woman?" Sandra was immediately shushed as she tried answering the very obvious rhetorical question.
"My son told me today that you have both agreed not to have children yet, when will you have children then, when your mother and I are dead or what? Do you want your husband to marry a second wife, even if he says he does not want a child now, once another lady ties him down with pregnancy, he will forget you and then all this beauty will go to waste. I know you are not a wayward girl and I trust you didn't do anything when you were younger so please get pregnant now so we can see our grandchildren before we leave this world. All Dare's elder siblings have children, he is the only one left without a child, you are the only child of your mother, don't you know your mother is lonely without anyone with her? My dear grant us this wish and forget whatever nonsense Dare has told you. I know men very well, he might just be telling you all this so that you will not lose your shape while he impregnates another lady outside. Iyawo(our wife) please do this for us, have you not seen women who become more beautiful with pregnancy, don't mind Dare and get pregnant."
It was time for Sandra to speak but she was dumbfounded, her paranoia was over the roof, she almost smacked herself for not thinking of these things, the messages she had been receiving flashed before her eyes. With trembling lips she thanked the elder lady for the advice, she may or may not have floated to her bedroom but it was hard to tell as she did not know when she arrived inside. Dare was still in the sitting room, she was thankful for that as she needed time to recollect her thoughts, she forced herself to sleep as she didn't what to be disturbed by what was meant as a harmless advise. If only the older lady knew about the text messages.
That night Sandra a nightmare, not your monster-under-the-bed kind of nightmare, she dreamt that she was back with her mother as Dare married another lady who already had two children for him, he had told her in the dream that he was tired of her and needed someone who would be the mother of his children and Sandra was not that person. She woke up with a start after that, she discovered it was four in the morning which meant she still had an hour before she prepared for work. She decided to prepare early. Which much difficulty, she walked to the bathroom, she was light-headed and dizzy. Her temperature was probably a hundred degrees. She had a very cold bath, it was the middle of June which meant the rainy season was upon them. She went to the kitchen and prepared breakfast, she ate hers with much difficulty as the bread felt like sand paper in her throat bad the tea tasted like it was mixed with bitterleaf juice instead of honey which she had used. She had a fever, she was fine the day before and now she was all sick. This was the effect of over thinking, the meals she missed the previous day and the stress she suffered throughout the week. She wished it was weekend already but sadly she had two days left as it was only Wednesday. She was done with her morning routine by 6:00am. Dare's mother was already awake but was yet to leave her room and Dare was still slumbering so no one noticed the sm-big woman whose hands shook as she took some drugs to ease the fever. Despite her spiked temperature, she was surprisingly very cold, she wore a thick cardigan as she walked slowly to her car to go to work.
The day was futile as Sandra could barely do anything at work. By 12:00pm her colleagues were worried as she held her stomach tight, she was on her period and was having severe cramps like she had never had before. Lucky for her, her boss came just in time to see her shivering as he tried taking pain killers, her immediately asked her to call her husband to pick her up as she was in no condition to drive. Sandra tried to prove stubborn by saying she was okay but her boss's decision was final, she was taking the rest of the week off and that was it.
Dare drove like a madman immediately he received the call from his wife, he was very worried about her. He told her boss he would come back for her car as he helped her walk to his car, she was shivering and her skin burnt him. He knew how much she hated hospitals but he was taking her to one as he couldn't pinpoint how a healthy person can become so sick overnight.
