"Mama, I have heard what you've said but there is no way I'm forgiving Dare. This marriage is over and I'm keeping the house, he signed himself, I didn't force him" Sandra said to her mother inlaw as she continued her snack. This was two days after their third anniversary, two days after she threw divorce papers to him. He was yet to sign them, he had called their parents to help him beg Sandra but she would not budge. They had tried all means to reason with her, but she was not listening to any of them. Sandra's mother did not say a word as Sandra had arrived at her home on Christmas day in tears and had played the voice recording of Dare to her, she couldn't believe her ears when she heard it but the evidence was more than enough to prove everything. She was in support of whatever Sandra chooses.
Dare could hardly believe his ears when Sandra told him to sign the divorce papers in front of him, he had not expected it. It was their third year anniversary, he expected her to loosen up as she had not spoken more than two words to him since the Christmas incident, it was almost a month and although he didn't expect her to forget what happened easily, he expected her to be happy on the day of their anniversary but he got something else instead.
He forgot he had signed over the house they were living in when they got married, with the thoughts that the next building would be bigger and better. The next building was still in it's foundation, he had abandoned the project a long time ago. If they both split up, he would lose a roof over his head and it would also be an insult to his pride. He threw back the papers, refusing to sign and she brought her lawyer the next day, he was terrified when he saw the conditions. If he refused to sign, she would take him to court where he would have to pay alimony and also lose his land. He couldn't bare that and had to get the family involved. He planned on turning the story to his favor but she had other things in store for him. She had recorded everything he said on Christmas day, she also had copies of pictures taken of him and his girlfriends. There was no way out.
Dare's family tried to beg Sandra but she didn't listen. By evening, they got tired of begging and advised dare to sign the papers if he didn't want to lose the little he had. Only dare's elder sister and his father supported Sandra, the others said all the insults they could think of as they left that day. Sandra told Dare to take all his belongings and leave with his family as he could no longer live with her.
Immediately they left, Sandra broke down. It was all gone, three years of her life was wasted. She was happy it wasn't longer. She was done with anything marriage, she wouldn't be able to bear another heartbreak, she cried herself to sleep in her mother's arms.
Throughout the week, her mother and Abigail tried to cheer her up. Her mother had to leave that weekend to take care if something, with promises of returning the next Wednesday. She was left with Abigail who was heavily pregnant, her boyfriend was still nowhere to be found. Sandra decided to ask about it to take her mind off Dare.
"Abby, when is your fiance returning?" Abigail who was laughing as she watched movies suddenly became serious.
"I don't think I should hide it anymore since you guys already split up" she said with an indifferent tone.Sandra was confused, she had no idea what Abigail meant.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, Dare is the father. Your ex-husband Dare. Stop looking at me like that, he is no longer your husband so there is nothing wrong" Sandra had a look of both disgust and disbelief, Abigail was trying to say she was seven months pregnant for her ex-husband.
"How could you?! I trusted you like a sister, how dare you?! I let you into my home all the time, not knowing you were having an affair with my husband" Sandra was screaming at the top of her lungs, she couldn't believe her ears, how long had they been together. Abigail visited her on some weekends and sometimes met Dare and she didn't notice anything weird. She had been played twice, where did they even meet?
"Stop shouting, you are disturbing my baby and I, besides he is already your ex-husband, stop acting like it is a big deal. What did you expect when you were always away?" The nerve of her, saying it like she did nothing wrong. Sandra was happy her mother was away, her temper was worse than her's.
"Abigail, get out! I never want to lay my eyes on you again. Please leave now that I am being nice, else the police will pick up your corpse and I in an hour" the murderous look in her eyes scared Abigail, she knew Abigail meant every word, she took her bag and ran as much as her protruding stomach could let her to her car.
Sandra went into another bout of tears, in a week she lost a husband and a best friend, she must be the most unlucky person in the universe. She cried so much she couldn't sleep, the next morning she packed her bags and drove off to meet her mother in her , she needed familiar people more than ever.
