'Your wife had a miscarriage' over the next five hours that Sandra was sleeping, Dare couldn't get the give words out of his head. He didn't even know Sandra was pregnant, how was that even possible? Although the doctor already explained everything to him, he couldn't help but ask himself how that happened to him. He was wondering how he would break the news to her, she would be heartbroken and depressed. Be had called their parents already and his mother was already with him, Sandra's mother and his father was arriving the next day, she needed all the love and attention she could get at this time. Abigail was her way already, he sat outside her room with his face buried in his palm, he had just lost a child, and he didn't even know when.
"Dare she is awake" his mother called out from the room, he quickly stood up and went to get one of the nurses who asked to be called immediately she woke up. The nurse arrived and ran some physical exams before telling them they could see her.
"What am I doing here?" She asked immediately they called inside, Abigail was there by then, although she was only told Sandra was terribly ill, she was very worried.
"You are very sick, the doctor said you will have to stay here for a week or more, depending on how fast you recover" Dare said gently.
"Recover from what? I only have a fever, I'm what to go back home, you know I can't stand hospitals" she said stubbornly, attempting to get up. She was however gently pushed back down by her mother in-law.
"Sandie what's wrong with you? You have been unconscious for five hours now, we have all been worried sick about you, do what the doctor says and maybe you will be discharged earlier than expected" it was Abigail who spoke, Sandra knew she had to listen to her friend and work on getting better quickly so she could get back to work. She finally and asked what the doctor diagnosed of her.
"My love, I don't know how to put this..." Dare began, Sandra feared for the worst, has she been diagnosed with some kind of fetal disease or what?
"Do I have a kidney disease or cancer?" She asked quickly before Dare could continue. The question was answered with a loud 'GOD FORBID' from her mother in-law and Abigail, her mother in-law sounding the loudest.
She was relieved she had non of those, but what if it was something much worse, she didn't let her thoughts wander as she quickly spoke up.
"D-D just tell me what it is, I can handle it as long as I'm not dying, I can take any news." Only parts of this statement was true, she was very much scared of what she was about to hear and she was not sure she could handle it but she was tired if the suspense and just wanted to know.
"My love, the thing is...the doctor said you should not worry that we have lots of chances that this once does not mean all is lost" Dare was beating around the bush, trying to make it sound as light as he could but he knew no body would take the news of a miscarriage light. When Sandra and the still ignorant Abigail kept looking at him expectantly, he had no choice but to drop the bomb.
"The doctor said you had a miscarriage" he said in one breath.
"What?!" She and Abigail shouted in shock. The look in her eyes was not something he could forget easily, she was horrified.
"But I was not pregnant" she said confused
"You saw your period twice this month and you kept complaining of stomach ache, it was not period or normal stomach cramps, I'm sorry my love but we will try again and we will not lose the baby" Sandra did not hear the words the others spoke, she was crying and they all tried their best to console her.
She didn't even know she was pregnant, she and Dare tried preventing pregnancy for sometime but she still got pregnant and this happened. Only if her mother in-law knew what was happening in her system as she gave her motherly advice.
She covered her face with her palm and cried, for the poor child who had just died, for the pain she was feeling and for neglecting her health that she had not noticed she was pregnant.
