DECEMBER. CHRISTMAS. NEW YORK.

Christmas in New York. The happiest time of the year. Where excitement, butterflies, and euphoria fills the atmosphere. But for some reason, I felt strange. Like I was missing something. But I don't know.

I finished washing the dishes, and now I am sweeping the floors. The jobs as a part-time waitress are endless. But despite the difficulties, I work for my college tuition. As you know, those can get pretty expensive, and my family can't afford that. Although the school I got admitted into, MIT, offered me a scholarship, it was only a partial one, so I needed to be productive this holiday to support my finances for my future.

"Y/N," Dave, my boss, called from the counter.

"Yep!"

"Your friends are here to see you...again."

A smile formed around my mouth as I hurried towards the diner's front from the back kitchen, sighing and wiping off the sweat dripping down from my forehead. This job was hard, but I'd rather do this than chill in bed all day. Not that chilling in bed is terrible - I just needed to be productive.

My mood immediately brightened up when I saw my two best friends.

"Oh hey, guys!" I smiled at the two, who took their seats at the left side of the counter.

"Hi - hi." MJ waved, and so did Ned. They both pulled out their computers and notebooks, getting prepared for studying. MJ and Ned always seem to come to the diner and study during my work shift. They both said that 'They like the mood there,' and 'it's better than the library.'

I guess they do have a point, the Dave's Diner is small but cozy. The bright Christmas lights and decorations, all plastered around the diner, made the atmosphere very cozy and welcoming.

"My future MIT students," I chuckled, leaning over the counter, "What can I get for you?" Quite luckily and surprisingly, all three of us got into MIT. So next fall, we are going to move to Boston together and hopefully get an apartment together but it depends on the school dormitory system. But it's exciting yet nerve-wracking that we're moving out from home for the first time, to a city that is hours away from our hometown.

"Oh, just a glazed doughnut for me, thanks," Ned replied, not looking up from his screen. He was rapidly typing on this laptop.

I raised a brow at him.

I guess he noticed or felt my suspicion as he replied automatically, "I just need to do last-minute application fill outs for the financial aid."

"And, just green tea for me, please," MJ added.
