Chapter 21: Jace

"This is the big kitchen. There's a smaller one upstairs with just the basics, but this is where we have large meals prepared for us."

Daniel isn't really looking at the kitchen; his eyes are trained on the fridge. "Holy shit, it's like...industrial. How do you have enough food to fill it?"

"Do you want to look inside?" I ask, smiling at his amazed look as I pull open the big fridge doors. "The groceries haven't been delivered yet, so it's a bit empty at the moment-"

"'A bit empty?' Jace, every shelf is almost full. What do you mean?"

"Well, these are just basic things. The major portions of our meals aren't here. Especially since Mom is now on an iron-rich kick because her doctor said her iron was very slightly low and she went a bit nuts. At least, that's what I gathered from her Facebook posts lately."

"She still uses Facebook?"

"Yeah." I grab some Babybel out of the cheese drawer and pass them to Daniel. "Snacks for the tour. Want grapes with that, or pretzels?"

"Got any SlimJims?"

"I don't think so? Jacque might, but I don't want to interrupt...whatever him and Max are dealing with up there."

Daniel tilts his head as I quickly point out the rest of interesting stuff in the kitchen. "He was helping Jacque pick out an outfit?"

"That's what they said they were doing. I don't believe that's what they're actually doing, but I'm not going to check. Ready to move on? I could show you the formal living room, the den, the movie room...Whichever you like first."

"Uh...is the living room and den interesting?"

"There's a mini-bar in the den? And we have a couple flatscreens? The movie room is more interesting. We have a snack bar." I take Daniel's hand and lead him over to the movie room, pushing open the heavy door and switching on the lights.

"Those are like actual movie theater seats...and a couple couches? This is a legitimate...theater?"

"Yeah. Projector is up there if we want the old-school vibe, but you can also screencast, or just stream through the screen."

Daniel shoves half his Babybel in his mouth. "Damn...If this is what these rooms are like...what's your room like? Got a flatscreen in there, too?"

"Yes. Don't most people have flatscreens now?"

"Not 70 inch ones!"

"Well, the ones in the living room and den are only 65 inches."

"Close enough. Is yours that big too?"

Phrasing. Watch the phrasing. "No. Mine is only 50 inches."

"Can we just skip to your room? I want to see...well...what your space is like?"

"Sure. We can head upstairs."

Daniel falls into step behind me as I lead the way to my room, opening the door. My lights are on their idle mode, filling the room with dim LED lighting of all colors. I brighten them up a bit and set it to a solid off-white, then gesture around my room.

"You have a loft bed?"

"It's not really a loft. Just a raised platform for my bed. A loft would have space underneath it. Mine's solid, except for the built-in drawers and shit."

Daniel turns away from my bed, scanning my room. "Nice PC. You game?"

"Not often, no. I mostly use it for drawing and fucking around with animation. My Wacom is in the drawer. I picked that one because I liked the red lights on everything, if I'm being honest."
