Chapter 19: Jace
I wake up in Daniel's bed, tangled up with him. I don't remember getting in his bed; I had fallen asleep on the air mattress he set up for me.
I roll over and study the room. The blanket from the air mattress has been have pulled off, pulled in the direction of Daniel's bed.
Oh. I must have gotten into his bed half-asleep, then. I extract myself from Daniel's limbs slowly, not wanting to wake him up, then slip out of his room into the hallway. I want something to drink.
"Good morning, Jace."
His dad is not as scary as his mom. I'll take it. "Good morning, Mr. Lacosta."
"Would you like pancakes? I'll make some extra."
"Oh, you don't have to. I wouldn't want to be a nuisance. Do you have a glass I could use, though? I'm thirsty."
Ty nods and opens one of the cabinets, passing me a plastic cup. "We have water, tea, orange juice, lemonade...Help yourself. And it wouldn't be any more work than having to make extra for Daniel because he has a bottomless pit for a stomach."
"Thank you." I open their fridge, scanning for the lemonade. Their fridge isn't like ours. It's a single large door for the regular part, and a smaller door directly on top for the freezer part, whereas ours is twice as big and double-doored. But this makes things much easier to find. "Thank you for letting me sleep over. I wanted to hang out with Daniel more."
"You're welcome. It was nice to finally meet you in person. I hear about you all the time, from Daniel."
"Good things, I hope?" I joke, sitting down on one of the mis-matched chairs at the table. "I hope my family didn't ruin your impression of me."
"Admittedly, we aren't trusting of your family. But that's nothing to do with you, personally. What your parents do isn't your problem."
"I'm glad you aren't judging me based on my dad. I'm not anything like my dad, and I don't want to be."
Ty nods, looking away from the stove when his wife walks in. "Hi, darling."
She just yawns at him. "Coffee."
"Already made, Char."
She smiles at him and kisses the side of his head, brushing past him to get to the coffee maker.
Ty jumps as she passes behind him-at the same time as I hear a soft sound of impact-, waving his spatula at her. "Hey...Not in front of Jace."
"In front of..." Charlotte turns, noticing me for the first time. "Oh! I didn't even register he was here. I need my coffee...Sorry you had to see me smack my husband's ass."
Oh.
Ty blushes a little. "You didn't have to spell it out. I'm sure he figured it out."
"I hadn't, honestly. My brain is slow in the mornings sometimes too."
Charlotte grabs a mug off the counter, then leans against it as she drinks the entire mug full of coffee in less than a minute. "Ty...making pancakes?"
"Yeah."
"Morning cuddle first," Charlotte directs.
Ty smiles and steps over to hug her, pulling her impossibly close. "I love you."
