Notes: Decided to start doing little summaries at the start for convenience, so! A lil bit of Dust angst for today. He finally gets to the surface, realizing just how lonely he is in his world. Bc I like to hurt him sometimes <3

Bright. Colorful. Loud. Windy. Soft. The moment Dust set his foot outside the cave, he was overwhelmed with hundreds of sensations. He saw blue, he saw green, he saw yellow, he saw brown. He saw the vibrant sky above that stretched on forever, the healthy trees and grass waving at him, the birds singing gleefully at his arrival. The bustling city in the distance, the animals scurrying by, the soft dirt under his shoes. Everywhere he looked, there was something new, the view was never suddenly cut off by a stone wall looming over his head at all times.

He couldn't help but stare agape at the view in front of him, it was like nothing he'd ever dreamed of seeing. None of the videos, books, or songs could ever truly describe how beautiful the surface was. It was a dream come true in every sense of the phrase. It was perfect. He let out a hoarse laugh and grabbed his hood in disbelief. And that meant this was it. He was out. They were all out, all of them! The human is gone and they're free!

He looked above his shoulder, hoping to see Papyrus just as happy as he was, but he wasn't there. Dust paused, looking around frantically. Everyone was gone. He tried to hear them calling to him, but even that wasn't there. No. Only the birds, only the wind, only the city. It was too loud. He couldn't hear them.

"Papyrus?" ... "Tori?" ... "Anyone?" Nothing.

Dust let the heavy silence weigh down on him, slowly turning to face the sky again. He was alone. Really, actually alone... And it was his fault. His fault. Slowly, but surely, he hiccuped. He sniffled, he choked, and the tears came rolling down his cheeks, one by one, onto the fresh dirt below him. He knelt down, his body shaking as the grief hit him in heavy waves.

Everyone was supposed to be here. They were supposed to be cheering and celebrating with him. He was supposed to show them the surface. He was supposed to have everything once he defeated the human. He was supposed to have his happy ending. So what happened? What did he do wrong? What did he do to deserve this? What did he do?

Unable to think anymore, he hugged himself and sobbed, and sobbed, and sobbed. The sun began to dip below the horizon, and the birds stopped singing, and the sky went dark. He doesn't know how long he was hunched over like that, just crying out for something else to happen. For someone to be there, for someone to have survived. But he knew better. He knew.

Once his tears began to slow, he looked up one last time, seeing the stars for the first time. Real, bright stars. It made him feel bad to think, but maybe...

Maybe he could live like this. Just maybe.
