I'm sitting in bed, reading, when I hear a knock. Papa's out so I grudgingly get out of bed and go to answer the door. I open it, seeing my girlfriend of six months, fuming.
"Mr. Mariano?" I ask with a raised eyebrow. She nods and stomps inside. I shake my head with a chuckle.
"It's not funny, Lia," she huffs walking up the stairs to my room.
"Of course not, Isa," I reply still grinning. When she reaches the top of the stairs I run up to her and wrap my hands around her waist before picking her up slightly and spinning her around.
We're both giggling and I put her down and turn her around to face me.
"Everything is gonna be ok mi amor. You have me," I tell her, before leaning down to kiss the younger girl. She kisses me back and as I pull away I see her smiling with a light blush on her cheeks
Although she was a year younger than me, we got along well and we're perfect for each other. We had actually met through Mariano. He was my dad's best friends son so we grew up together. We were about as close as siblings.
Mariano had introduced Isabela to me in an attempt to have me put in good words about him to try to get them closer. Although, without his knowledge, it backfired on him given I was now dating her.
Isabela and I enter my room and she flops onto my bed dramatically. I laugh at her antics before sitting next to her. She sits up a bit before starting to rant about Mariano. Something about the kids in town dancing and him asking her to dance with him.
"He's not a bad guy. He's just trying to hard," she tells me as I run my fingers through her hair.
"Trying to hard to get a lesbian at that," I tell her. We both laugh before she lays her head in my lap.
"I just wish we didn't have to be a secret," I sigh, causing her to look up at me.
"I know and I'm sorry, my familia, they expect this certain thing of me and I-" she starts.
"-you don't want to let them down. I get it. Imagine their faces when you tell them you don't want to marry Mariano, and you're dating a girl. No offense, your abuela can be a bit..." I pause, trying to think of the word.
"Traditional?" she asks and I nod. "Yeah I know, it will be a fun conversation."
I lean down to kiss her forehead. We've been together six months and were friends for about six months before that. The only people who know about us are my dad and Dolores. Dolores overheard us and covers for us whenever we're at casita, posing as best friends. Dad understands Isabela's struggles, and understands why she's over often. He likes Isabela though, and doesn't mind it.
I then tell Isa something I remembered dad talking about. "Pa told me something last night," I say aloud, causing her to look up at me.
"Hm?"
"Mariano's mom told him he's planning on proposing soon," I tell her and suddenly a bunch of bright flowers appear in her hair, along with a shocked look appearing on her face.
"Oh god, I can't say no. So I either have to tell him in front of both our familia's that I infact don't love him but love his friend, or I have to marry him." she says. I nod at her and she burries her face in her hands.
"I can ask Mariano if I can be there when he proposes if it'll help to have me there," I tell her. She removes her hand's from her face and looks up at me.
"Please, it would definitely help," she responds. I lean down and kiss her nose. Suddenly I hear the door downstairs open and after a few seconds I hear my dad calling for me.
