Annabeth refuses to sleep, and it's getting on my nerves. I'd originally promised myself I wouldn't use charmspeak on my friends unless it was absolutely necessary, and I think I could make a valid argument that this is one of those cases.
"You need to sleep," I insist, really hoping I won't have to resort to charmspeak. My chances aren't looking too high, though.
"I'm waiting," she demands. I roll my eyes.
"For what? Percy to get better? At this rate, it's going to be a while. Meanwhile, you should sleep," I say stubbornly.
"What if he wakes up and needs something and I'm sleeping?" She asks.
"Then I'll be here," I promise. She shakes her head, mumbling something that sounds like 'not good enough'. "Excuse me? I'm not good enough?"
"I don't know what kind of hero you're trying to be, Piper, but you can stop. I don't need you here. I never asked you to stay, you invited yourself."
I can feel the sadness overwhelming me, but it turns to anger. "I can't believe you." Then it's sadness again.
Her eyes widen a little.
"I-I didn't..." She stammers.
"You didn't mean it? I've been sitting in here with you for a week, doing nothing but comforting you. All I want to do is help! And I'm not good enough? You didn't ask me to be here? I was trying to be supportive. For Zeus' sake, if nothing else I was keeping you company." It's my turn to shake my head. I've been doing everything I can for both her and Percy, and she isn't even slightly grateful. Maybe I've been too overbearing. It has to be my fault, Annabeth doesn't usually overreact. I should give her some space. I try not to cry as I turn away from her and fold my blankets, setting them in the corner.
"Piper, wait, I'm sorry, don't leave," she pleads. I smooth down my hair as I reach the door.
"You should sleep," I whisper. "And you know where I'll be if you need anything."
