Chapter 7-Darius

A soft computerized beep woke Darius from his sleep. He sat upright in his chair and blinked hard, for the blinding white lights had come on in the room.

                  “Wylla?” he asked.

                 “Shh,” she whispered.

Darius’s eyes adjusted to the light quickly and he gasped when he saw Wylla. She blushed slightly when she saw his eyes on her.

“Is it too much?” she asked, shyly.

                 “It’s perfect,” he said, stunned.

Wylla wore a classic black dress with spaghetti straps. It was lacy and fell to her knees. The back was cut low, but high enough so her wings weren’t visible. Her blonde hair was in a curly style over her shoulders. She wore slight makeup; lipstick that made her lips rose pink and eye shadow that made the colours in her eyes stand out. Black mascara outlined her eyes. A gold pendant hung at her neck.

She swiped her card through a lock on the side of his cube. There was another beep and the locks which Darius wore popped open. The cube was lifted upwards and Darius leapt up from his chair.

              “I’m free!” he cried.

He jumped off his chair and raced towards her. He flung his arms around her. Startled, she hugged him back. They both stared at one another, unable to back away. Then Wylla stepped back hastily, slightly embarrassed.

“It’s ten to six,” she muttered. “Put this on the wall. Just press the button on the side of it. Lock the gadget in your chair. If I don’t return in five minutes, climb up the vent system on the side.”

            “What?” Darius began.

“Darius, listen!” Wylla snapped. “This is a time-sensitive mission! Do you understand?”

“Um, I think so,” Darius began.

“Great!” she whirled out of the room in her dress and high heels.

Darius took a deep breath once she had gone. Then he glanced down at the gadget which she had given him.

             It was a bomb.

The timer was ticking down. There were about 9 minutes and 56 seconds left. He yelped in surprise. Of all the gadgets that she’d given him, a bomb was the least likely one he had expected her to give him to use.

He raced over to the chair which he had sat in four seconds ago and dumped the bomb on it. Then he pressed the button and it lashed onto the leg of the chair.

Darius used his telekinesis powers to rip open the lid below the vent. Once it was free, he caught the lid and set it down on top of the floor.

The clock on the timer was ticking. One minute passed. Then two. Halfway through the third minute, Darius decided that he’d had enough. He had to find Wylla and see if she was okay.

He raced out of the room. Unfortunately, there were ten agents in the corridor when Darius left. But none of them even looked at him as he ran past. Startled, Darius looked down at himself.
