Chapter 10-Sparrow

Sparrow surfaced, pulling Arwen up next to him. The air had never tasted so sweet. Well, perhaps when Wylla had kissed him, it had tasted sweeter.

Lancelot and Darius reached the surface too. Lancelot was panting and gasping for breath, but Darius was fine. He wasn’t even breathing hard.

“Let’s get to the shore,” Darius panted.

              “Wait!” Sparrow said. “Where’s Wylla?”

“Wasn’t she with you?” Darius asked.

“She said something about your chest!” Sparrow said. “I told her to go to the surface and she nodded. I thought she was behind me!”

              “Oh, damnation!” Darius hissed.

He dived back into the water. Sparrow cursed and was about to plunge back in too when Lancelot grabbed his arm.

“No!” he snapped. “Darius will get Wylla. You can’t get in that deep, Sparrow, you know you can’t. Help me with Arwen. She’s not even conscious.”

Sparrow hesitated, torn and then yanked on Arwen’s arm. He had to help Arwen get to the side first and then he would help Darius with Wylla.

The two boys swam over to the shore, pulling Arwen along between them. Before they even reached the shore, Darius and Wylla resurfaced.

“Wylla!” shouted Sparrow, swimming over to them as Lancelot pulled Arwen out of the lake.

“Get the chest, Lancelot,” Darius called.

He threw the chest over to Lancelot who caught it and dropped it on the edge of the lake. Darius and Sparrow together pulled Wylla to the edge, but she wasn’t breathing. They tugged her out of the lake and laid her on the grass next to Wylla.

“Sparrow, do you know how to do life resuscitation?” Darius asked. “I’ll work with-”

“Yeah, I’ll help Wylla,” Sparrow interrupted and started pumping his strength on her heart.

Darius turned towards Arwen reluctantly and Sparrow focused on Wylla. He had done this before with Arwen, so he knew how to fix Wylla.

He pinched Wylla’s nose and pressed his mouth to hers, blowing all the air from his lungs into hers. Then he started all over again with the same process.

“Sparrow,” Lancelot began. “Let me do this. You do the mouth-to-mouth part.”

Lancelot began to push over Wylla’s heart and Sparrow blew more air into Wylla’s lungs. She lay still like a corpse. Darius panted, leaning away from Arwen. She sat up too, breathing hard; her white face even paler than before. Coughing hard, she spat up some water.

“Can you help Wylla?” Sparrow asked desperately.

He was so anxious that he didn’t care even if Darius was the one to save Wylla’s life. Darius dragged himself back over to Wylla, his face white too.
