Chapter 1- Darius
Head spinning, he tried to open his eyes. They refused to respond. Trying again, he heard voices nearby. He tried to hone in on the sound, but it just made his ears buzz.
An excruciating pain flamed in his belly and it got worse the longer he lay there. He tried to move his hands. They refused to cooperate too.
The buzzing in his ears faded slowly and he heard a girl’s voice speak. It was softer than he imagined, but it was there. Gentle but persistent. Almost as if he were in her head.
“Don’t try to move,” she said. “You’ll just hurt yourself.”
Darius didn’t bother responding. But as he lay there, the pain in his stomach lessened and his muscles relaxed slowly. Then he heard the girl speak again.
“Just relax. You’ll be fine.”
Darius frowned and tried to open his eyes again. This time, they responded and he was almost immediately blinded by a glowing white light.
“I did warn you,” the girl said. “Perhaps you should listen next time before trying to react.”
Scowling, Darius blinked away the black spots in front of his eyes and tried to focus on where the girl was. She was standing at the end of his bed, dressed in a white coat over a blouse and skirt.
“Who-,” he tried and was cut off by his extremely dry throat.
“Don’t try to speak,” she said. “You need to rest.”
Darius opened his mouth to say something scathing, but the words died away in his throat. The girl in front of him was, beyond doubt, the most beautiful girl he had ever seen.
She had shoulder-length blonde hair, straight and sleek, falling in a neat bob. Her eyes shimmered, changing colour in the light, appearing to be blue, then gold, then green. Her eyelashes were long and brushed her cheeks when she looked up. Her lips were pink and set in a double curve over very white teeth.
“Who are you?” she asked.
“I thought you just told me not to speak,” Darius retorted.
The girl shrugged. “Apparently you can talk.”
Scowling, Darius glanced down at himself. His clothes had been taken away and he wore a pair of blue and brown pyjamas. They weren’t exactly the most fashionable statement that he could have been dressed in.
“Did you make me wear this stuff?” he asked the girl.
“Nope,” she said. “Another guy helped you. I’m your... doctor.”
Darius caught the smile that had briefly outlined her face. Then she saw him looking and her expression hardened a little.
