Link lifted his shovel with a grunt.
He dumped the old straw and dung into a bucket."Whatcha doing?"
He looked up to see Zelda standing at the barn door.
He straightened up embarrassed.
He was sure he looked like a mess."I'm just mucking out the stalls"
he said
"I'm almost done, do you need something?"
"No,"
replied Zelda.
"I need to get back to the lab but I was just seeing if there was anything I could help you with before I left"
"oh- that's alright I was gonna go dump the dung buckets out"
"ok, I'll help"
she stated.
She started across the floor to him."You don't have to-"
"I don't mind"
she said, smiling.
"And besides, it's only fair. You and Arln did me a big favor today"
Link turned red as she reached up and pulled a piece of straw out of his hair.
"As you wish"
he said, defeated.
Zelda laughed and grabbed a bucket."Now where do I dump this?"
Link led her outside to the back of the stable where the field bordered the forest.
After they dumped out the buckets he showed her how they spread the dung and straw with pitchforks."We wouldn't want it to suffocate the grass"
he explained
"but lots of the plants in the woods like it so we dump it out here"
"hmm"
said Zelda
"I don't remember doing this when I was little but then again I didn't remember the milk tasting that good either, hahahahahahaha"
" ahahaha! well thats because we only started doing it a few years agop."Link replied
"I remembered finding mushrooms growing where there had been deer skat"
"that's right, I remember that too!"
Exclaimed Zelda.Something was tickling her mind.
She fished In her pocket and found one small, unused test-tube she used a slurpee straw to scoop a small amount of feces into the tube before sealing it tightly."You've given me an idea!"
She said.
She hugged link tightly with one arm."I gotta run, I'll talk to you later!"
Link laughed in surprise as she sped away.
"That's more like the sun I remember"
he said softly to himself.
Back at her work station Zelda prepared the sample.
She felt strange and realized that she was excited for the results.
She hadn't been excited about any experiments in a long time, it was just numbers and data.
She forgot what it was like to have a hypothesis.
She frowned.
It made her think about going back to the city, and that was something she didn't want to think about.Bloop-bloop bloop-bloop bloop-bloop.
Her timer was going off and she realized it was time to remove the sample.
She spread a small amount on a plate and placed it under the microscope.
She couldn't stop a smile from spreading across her face as she peered at the magnified image.
''just as I suspected"
she said.
The next morning link was coming back from the field when he saw a strange man in front of his house.
He was dressed impracticaly for the cold weather and had clearly come from the city.
"Hello, can I help you?"
Asked link, approaching the man.
"Ah, yes! Are you the owner?"
He asked
"yes I am, I'm Link, pleased to meet you"
said link, shaking the man's hand.
The man shook his hand but quickly wiped it afterwards.
Link realized he was slightly dirty from work and felt uncomfortable.
"I'm with Bolson construction and I wanted to speak with you about selling this property"
"oh, well I'm sorry you've come all this way,"
said link
"but I'm really not interested in selling the place"
the man smiled condescendingly
"Well we're just waiting on a few permits but as soon as those go through you may not have a choice"
Link opened his mouth but couldn't think what to say.
"Do you mind if I have a look around?"
Continued the man
"yes I do, actually"
said link, finding his voice
"I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to get off of my property"
"alright, I'll get out of your hair"
replied the man
"it is your property..."
he turned and started to walk away
"for now"
