Aaron was silent during most of the party. He asked questions about Lucinda every now and then, but he kept his distance for the most part. Lucinda asked him about his vision and his memory, which he said were both coming back slowly, his memories slower than his vision.
After a bit, the door bell rang.
"I'll get it." Zane said. When he opened the door, he almost dropped his cup, "G-Gene?! What are you guys doing here?"
"We were invited." Gene said, "Not like you have any say in the matter."
"Come on, can we just welcome Lucinda and enjoy the party?" Sasha asked as she and Zenix walked inside.
"We still work with Aphmau, after all." Zenix said.
Zane looked back at Gene, "I'm keeping my eye on you."
"Still don't think I haven't changed?" Gene asked, narrowing his eyes.
"I just don't want you to cause any trouble. Aphmau went through a lot of trouble putting this together."
"I'm not up to anything. Let's just avoid each other for the night." He walked passed Zane to greet Lucinda and the others.
"Fine by me!"
"I don't think I ever thanked you guys for looking after the maid Cafe while I was gone." Aphmau said to her friends who worked there, "I really appreciate it. One day, I'll tell you why I was gone for so long."
"Any time." Zenix said.
"We didn't want to leave the place hanging, so we ran it the best we could." Sasha added.
"You guys should take some time off for a while. You've earned it." Aphmau said.
"Thanks!"
"So, how's it been being a werewolf, Garroth?" Lucinda asked.
"Well, I just got hidding my ears and tail down. Look." He said with pride. He hid his ears and tail and made them reappear.
"That's awesome!"
"Well, I've had some help."
"Aw. Thanks, Garroth." Melissa said.
"Oh, yeah. Aphmau, how's it been going for you?" Lucinda asked.
"I'm pretty much on the same level as Garroth here." Aphmau said.
"That's great. You know, you should really show your ears more often."
Aphmau grinned softly as she looked up at her ears. She sometimes forgot that she was a werewolf and would often put her ears and tail away. But she knew she needed to get used to it. It's who she is now.
Within the next hour, Dottie, Daniel, Rylan and Cadenza came. They all greeted their friends again, all of them surprised and ecstatic seeing their alpha was now a werewolf like them. Not that it mattered to them either way. They were saddened to see Aaron in such a state.
Aaron said very little to anyone, and after a bit, went outside. Aphmau noticed him leave and followed him.
"Hey, Aaron." She said, sitting next to him, "You're pretty quiet tonight."
Aaron said nothing for a minute before saying, "It... just doesn't feel right."
Aphmau turned to him. He had his head tilted up, as though he were looking at the stars.
"There's so many people in there who remember me, but... I don't remember almost anything about them. I almost feel... guilty."
"It's not your fault, Aaron." She placed her hand on his arm in comfort, "None of this is your fault. It just... happened."
"I wanted to thank you. You and everyone really looked out for me."
Aphmau felt her eyes well up. If he only knew, "You're... you're welcome."
"And I'm sorry for forgetting all of you."
Aphmau felt the first tear fall from her eyes. She grabbed Aaron's arm as she let the tears fall. "I'm always going to be here for you." She whispered for only him to hear, "I'm never leaving you again, FC."
Aaron wouldn't be able to explain it, but those words were all it took.
He felt an overwhelming wave of memories and emotions rush over him.
Phoenix Drop High, Falcon Claw University, ComicCon, Love Love Paradise, Lovers Lane, the lodge.... Starlight.
His tears fell almost instantly. All the things he's done.
All those people...
What had he done?
"Aphmau...."
Aphmau felt her heart stop. He'd never called her that until now.
She looked up at him with wide eyes and saw his tears through his blind fold.
"Aaron?..."
"I'm sorry."
"What..."
"I remember."
Aphmau's heart burst. After waiting for what felt like years, he finally remembered.
She was about to say something until she noticed he was crying harder. "I'm so sorry about Starlight. What I did to all those people, what you went through-"
Aphmau grabbed his face, "No. You're not allowed to be sorry because you did nothing wrong. None of what happened is your fault. What happened to you, to me, to all of us, wasn't your fault. Please don't ever say that again."
She took off his blindfold so that he could cry more comfortably. She stared into his glossy, clouded eyes.
Aaron slowly nodded before pulling Aphmau into a tight embrace. He smiled once he remembered all the good memories.
He remembered being reunited with Aphmau, again and again, the times they shared, proposing to her. His happiness now outweighed his guilt as he held her tightly. He felt her sobbing into his chest, holding him just as tightly.
While it also broke him that he could only see her silhouette, he was still happy that she was here.
Alive.
With him.
"I'll always love you, you stupid potato."
Aphmau pulled away to look at his face with a smile.
She missed that name. She pulled his face down and they shared a brief soft kiss before holding each other again.
Behind them, their friends inside the house overheard everything from an open window. They were touched by the moment and happy for their friends.
Many of them had tears in their eyes, especially Sylvanna.
After a moment, they went back to the party. They'd let them know they heard everything later.
Aphmau and Aaron, no matter how many times separated, would always find each other again.
Forever.
