Sarah was walking back from her last lecture at the university. Wearing her pink sneakers she had her backpack hanging from her right shoulder. She is what you can call a perfect nerd. Not that she wants to but she knows how hard it was to get here and now she can't mess it up.
A graduate degree in business is nothing less of a game-changer for her. From her denim jacket to the wristwatch she was wearing everything bought from a thrift store. Being short on money is something she had lived her whole life. And, not doing a job since she turned fifteen was not an option for her. Her mother, Catherine had worked as a maid for Williamsons for as long as she can recall but now her heart was weak and she couldn't give a lot of hours on it. Mrs Williamson's was not the woman who would offer anyone more than they deserve and Sarah's mother Catherine too didn't expect anything in return.
Sarah was rushing to catch a bus to downtown where she was babysitting an eight-year-old girl Emma. The little girl was such a sweetheart and except to cook lunch for her, Sarah could easily sit beside Emma who would drawing giving Sarah a lot of time to work on her own assignments. Even the free wifi she would get to use at Emma's place was an edge.
It was after eight in the night when Emma's mother reached home and Sarah took leave. On her way to the bus, Sarah tried for her mother's number and Catherine picked up on the second ring,
"Hey mom, how are you now?" Sarah asked and Catherine was quick to ask in excitement. "I am fine, honey. How your college is going? Are you back to campus?"
"No, mom...just getting there...I promise I will come to visit you this weekend. My finals are next month and I won't be able to visit for a few weeks so..."
"Don't worry about me. Sandra is always checking on me. And, if something ever happens she will be the first to tell you,..."
"No, mom..." Sarah was quick to cut her off. Sandra was not only Catherine's colleague but also stayed close to her apartment.
"Don't worry...I am still to see you walk down the aisle...and, play with your kids..." Sarah chuckled and looked at the bus coming. She never had the luxury to be in a relationship and her mom was talking about kids.
"For right now I only want you to get better," Sarah whispered and her mother smiled,
"Don't worry...I will have the surgery in a few months and everything will be fine." Her mother whispered and she too smiled humorlessly. "Definitely,"
Her mother hung up because Sandra came to see her and Sarah too bid her farewell to her mother and got the bus and walked to her dorm in the university. She had a full scholarship and would do a job to eat or save up a little for her mother's bypass surgery every month.
Her mother too was trying to save as much as she could and even Sandra was saving up despite her being a single mother with two teenage boys and could only do enough though.
The moment Sarah started walking to her room in the dorm a little anxiety settles in her heart. She knew what was coming and she was trying her best to prepare herself. She knew that she was on a scholarship and one mistake could land her into trouble. One mistake could literally destroy everything for her. She tries not to tell anyone or take as much as she could but her roommate Valerie would always double the game.
Sarah opened the door slowly but her stomach dropped a little seeing three girls already sitting in there. Loud music was playing on the stereo and all eyes fell on her before Valerie shouted. "Here comes our favourite girl!" Sarah got her glasses up and closed the door behind her only for one of her friends to throw a pillow on Sarah.
"She is such a bummer." One said,
"Look at her clothes...God, she is awful." The other said,
Ignoring their comments she tried to get to her bed but Valerie was quick to yell, "Where do you think you are going?"
Sarah looked up wondering now what she wanted of her today but the moment she noticed her notes scattered on Valerie's bed and on the floor where her feet rested her eyes got widened. Her finals were around the corner and there was no way she could afford to lose these at this point.
"My..." Sarah trailed off but was quick to get to her bed and leaned down to quickly pick five of the pages before Valerie straight up and look into her eyes.
"You need to earn these. Go and clean the bathroom and you can get these."
"That's not my job, Valerie...and, please...please give me my notes," Sarah got down to pick one other paper before one of Valerie's friends got the papers and move them on the scented candles.
"The cleaner had an off today. And, we were not waiting for you to hear about your excuses."
Sarah only gasped looking at her. "Don't do this...why are you doing this?" Valerie smirked and looked at her. "You don't know why are we doing this to you? You are here in this university and you don't pay tuition. You get to breathe in the same room as me that too for free...and, what's the trouble in cleaning the bathrooms. Your mother is a maid and...you used to help her around when you were a teen. Didn't you?"
Sarah wonders what she did to deserve all of it. Valerie and her friends started before her but were still repeating and were at the brink of being expelled if it wasn't for their money. They could literally pay forever to stay in the university. In fact, all of them were three years older than her.
"I am sure she doesn't need these notes. You know she is brainy. Or why she would be standing here. Still talking to us." This time that friend showed her more than three files that had Sarah's notes and if these get destroyed there was no way she was going to pass her exams.
"Look...give me these...and, you have my word. I will clean the bathrooms and...I will do anything as you say. Just give me these..."
"Great...first go and clean the bathroom and we will return you these." Sarah heaved looking at those girls but she was bound. Only if she could afford a little locker here she would secure her things there before going out but she was barely getting her dinner sometimes.
With her eyes stinging with tears she walked to the bathroom and got the cleaning supplies. It took her an hour before she got out and only got into the room to gasp in horror. Girls were not there but all of her notes were now turned into ashes.
She cried for hours and wanted to kill herself at this point. There was no point in living. She knew leaving her mom to come here for her degree was the meanest thing she did and now she was being punished for it. It was not her place. And, it was so stupid of her to ever believe that she could get a nice life for herself.
"But I wanted to do it for my mom. I thought getting a degree would get a nice job...and, I...I would be able to get her money sooner....what I will do now. I...I can't lose the hope...I...I have to do something...I know...I know I can do this. I will not sleep but I will get through it."
Her body was aching when she walked back to her bedroom. She was awake from six in the morning and now felt drained. She walked to her bed and only looked at the piles of torn papers or ashes.
Getting her hair high in a bun she was about to start cleaning the pile when she got a call on her cell phone. It was quite an old phone without a camera but it never bothered her as long as she could receive texts or phone. Seeing Sandra's number on her phone got her worried but she was quick to pick. "Hello,"
"Sarah! Darling your mom is unconscious. I am taking her to the hospital but make sure you get here as soon as possible...oh God, she is so blue."
