"Hello, my favorite girl." Of course, Sarah recognized her in an instant.
"Valerie?" She mumbled but on the other side, a laugh was heard.
"It is Mrs. Williamson now. You did hear all about it some time ago. Didn't you?" Of course, Robert's wedding was one of the most sought-after events. If anything their following has amassed in recent months as a couple. Valerie had given glimpses of her high-end life on social media and papers will always give hype to one of her posts after a few.
"Where did you get my number?" Sarah couldn't think of a single reason why she was important to Valerie now. In the past, she knew Valerie was jealous of her academic success. But now she wasn't left with anything that could interest Valerie.
"What? Can't I call an old friend?"
"We were never friends, Valerie." Sarah reminded her.
"Well, we kind of were. If you never acknowledged it. It sounds like your problem." Sarah could tell from the sound she was still the old-time Valerie. Nothing changed.
"I am going to hang up," Sarah announced but Valerie hurriedly stopped her.
"Don't. It was you who left your number yesterday. Precisely when it was only one minute left to submit. I must say I knew I needed only you for this job. If you know what I am talking about. Just know I can't talk all about it on my phone. I don't trust phones. But meet me at Hilton's at 10 am sharp today..." Sarah now recalled the surrogacy job. Her chest was instantly stuffed with anxiety. "...I know things are hard out there, Sarah. And, I mean help. Also, can you imagine I am up at seven in the morning? Well, a lot has changed about me..." Valerie still sounds all chatty and about herself. But when she didn't hear Sarah on the other end she asked. "...are you there, Sarah?"
Sarah had her ears red now. Standing at the road she looked ahead and tried her best to not wet her eyes when she replied. "I...I need money soon. Some of it upfront."
"Honey, I told you we can't talk about it on the phone. Can I expect you?" Sarah nodded but then knowing she can't see her she replied. "I will be there."
Sarah didn't go to her job but instead walked back to her place and donned her best white dress that reached her knees. She matched it with her good jacket.
Sarah knew she was scrapping at the bottom but at least didn't want to look like it. She reached the Hilton hotel at sharp ten and told the desk about her meeting with Valerie.
The receptionist told her to wait in the lobby and Sarah ended up waiting for two long hours before the receptionist asked her to follow her. Sarah was welcomed into a VIP suite and was asked to wait in the living area. Every second was a true torture. But at least a known enemy was still a better option. She knew if she was doing it for Valerie or Robert they won't be selling her body parts or drug her. They didn't have any shortage of money. They could get anything. Even a baby.
And, no matter how much she hates Robert's mom for not showing any mercy for her such an old employee she never cut her mother's rightful pay. Sarah was still thinking if she was sorting out the right option by being a surrogate. It was all too sudden.
She didn't want to do anything she regrets later on but somehow learning it was a couple she knew and not a shady organization gave her some courage.
For a moment she wonders what she will reply to her mom. But then decided she can tell her she is doing it for a friend. She knew her mother will still oppose it given how religious she is but at least this will give her enough money for her mother's treatment.
A thousand thoughts had her puzzled when Valerie walked in. "Hey, I am so happy to see you." Valerie had a long party dress on. As if she is going to attend an award show. Her hair was made with perfection while her hands were perfectly manicured.
