*Camilo*
"I hate you!" I screamed, when I was finally released from Luisa's grip and I tumbled onto the floor in the central room at home at the bottom of the staircase. "How could you leave her there?!"
Abuela had never looked more furious. "What did you say to me?" she hissed, walking towards me quickly. I scrambled up from the floor and turned to face her.
"I said I hate you! You have us - all of us - do your chores with our gifts, you make us work every single day from the day we turn five, and the one day I actually want to help someone, you don't let me! You made me leave her behind? You want me to use my gift, let me use my gift!" I yelled back at her.
The rest of the family was awake - I could see Dolores, Mirabel, Isabella and Antonio at the top of the stairs. They looked terrified and were looking to their parents at the bottom of the steps for guidance on how to help. I saw my aunt wave them away back to their rooms, mouthing something to them.
Abuela reached me and I thought for sure she would hit me again. I steeled myself for it, but it didn't come.
"I did what was best. You can scream and shout obscenities all night if you want. You want to use your gift? Do as I say, and let this go. You are blinded by your feelings for the girl," Abuela said.
"Her name is Y/N," I yelled, as Abuela walked past me, up the stairs. I ran for the door, but Luisa blocked me.
"Camilo, please, stop," she said, looking to Abuela.
"What, you're going to assign Luisa to me as my personal bodyguard?" I asked, whipping around. "She can't stay awake all night, god forbid she can't do her duties to the village in the morning! When everyone is asleep, I'm going back for her. You can't guard me forever."
Abuela paused halfway up the stairs. "You're right," she said, and the shock must have shown in my face because I saw my cousins and siblings faces reflect it at the top of the stairs. "I can't have Luisa staying up all night to guard you, she knows her place in the family and will be ready to help out the village in the morning - despite the late hour." She turned around. "Luisa, take Camilo to his room."
"As if escorting me upstairs is going to stop me from walking right back down here," I said sarcastically as she picked me up again. "Oh - god! Will you PUT ME DOWN I NEED TO GET BACK THERE!" I struggled and hit at her, and once again she didn't do anything, but just brought me up the stairs. She passed my cousins and siblings - I had a huge pang of guilt seeing Antonio's little face. He looked terrified. I had never seen him look at me that way before. I stopped yelling and simply struggled to get free.
Luisa opened the door to my room and walked me inside, followed closely by Abuela and my parents. I heard my mother shoo everyone else to bed, saying they would discuss it in the morning and that we all needed some sleep.
"If you will insist on acting like a wild animal who needs to be locked up, who cannot be trusted to stand by his family when they make a decision, you will be treated as such!" Abuela yelled. "Pepa, Felix, would you like to try to reason with your son before I take such a drastic measures?"
What drastic measures? "Mami, Papa, please," I begged. "You saw her face! You know her! Why on earth would she trash the house like that? Her father is always on her case, you know that!"
