The fire hit Y/N and my yell was so loud that I thought my throat would rip in two. Gabriella immediately threw me to the ground, knocking the wind out of me, and stood up to move towards Y/N and Diego, when all of a sudden there was a giant explosion of light, throwing her off her feet. I held my hand to cover my eyes, the light so bright it burned my eyes, the pain in my arm making me reel and roll over onto my back. Suddenly, the light was gone and the darkness that was left felt so complete that I wanted to close my eyes and just let it take me. My face pounded, the burn on my arm hurt so badly it was all I could do to not scream. And Y/N, she was ... she was ... I clamped my eyes shut, trying to un-see the fire hitting her, wanting to die, knowing that I couldn't save her, couldn't do anything, and just wanting it all to end. But suddenly, I felt a strange warm sensation, almost the opposite of how it had felt when Diego had grabbed my hand earlier. I opened my eyes. It was still dark, but my eyes began to adjust. The pain still was ripping through my arm, but something was different. What had happened?

From where I was lying on the ground, I twisted around to look at where Gabriella and Javier had gone. I saw them lying a few yards away, both seemingly unconscious on the ground. I whimpered, remembering the pain when she had burned me, and tried to pull myself up, started to shuffle backwards away from where they lay, my eyes on them the entire time. My arms screamed with pain and tears poured down my face, but slowly, slowly, I inched away from them. They still just lay there. I slowly stood up, taking a second to orient myself as I stood, feeling nauseous, turning back towards the house - and then I saw it. The candle in the window. It was lit. For a second, I just stared, not quite believing it. I looked down at myself, and shifted immediately into someone else. Shifting didn't change my injuries unfortunately, and I shifted back to myself, stunned. I looked back at the unconscious Gabriella and Javier. What had happened? Our gifts were back? I looked around and then I saw her.

Also seemingly unconscious, with her brother lying beside her, exactly where Gabriella had struck her down, was Y/N. I yelled out in shock, and then started to run towards them, the pain in my arm forgotten. I skidded onto the ground next to them on my knees, grabbing her and turning her over from where she lay on her side. Her head rolled to the side, her eyes closed - but she wasn't burned. How was she not burned? I was breathing so quickly I thought I might pass out. I leaned over her, put my head on her chest, listening ... a heartbeat. I burst into tears, laughing out loud with relief, righted myself and looked at her face closely. It was like she was sleeping, her chest rising and falling slowly. I bent over her and lay my head on her chest again, just listening to her heartbeat. She was alive. Unbelievably, somehow, she was alive. I sat up again, my face soaking wet, wiping the tears away to help me see better, and shook her.

"Y/N, wake up!" I whispered. "You're okay, wake up!"

"Get away from her," I heard behind me. I whipped around. Gabriella was standing there, staring down at me.

I got to my feet, moving in front of Y/N. "She's alive somehow. I won't let you hurt her again," I said, my voice shaking, remembering the pain. "You'll have to kill me first."

"If you say so," Gabriella said. She made a motion with her hands, like she usually did when she ignited them, but nothing happened. Her expression changed to horror as she gaped at her hands, and clearly tried to ignite them again. Nothing happened.

"I don't understand!" she screamed. Her eyes turned to Diego, still lying beside Y/N, unconscious. I moved in front of him.

"You're not taking him," I said. "You're not going to get anywhere near either of them."

She narrowed her eyes at me. "I don't know what happened here, but Diego is my son, and he's coming with me."

Suddenly, I heard a stirring movement behind me and saw Y/N beginning to regain consciousness. As I looked back, I saw my family running down towards us from the house. I turned from Gabriella and knelt down next to Y/N, helping her sit up. Before I could blink, Gabriella had grabbed Diego and tried to lift him up. I immediately shifted into the largest person from the village and easily knocked her down, grabbing Diego in my arms, wincing as pain ripped through me.
