Chapter 3: Change of Plans

Ruby and the rest of the group opened the doors and packed into one of the rear cars, where Oscar was trying to nurse Dudley, who was whimpering in pain. He cradled his left arm gently, injured from where he had smashed it against the entrance to the tunnel. Qrow marched to the front, and grabbed the still grunting Dudley by the shoulders, pushing him against the wall.

Qrow: "I said, turn those damn things OFF!"

Dudley: "Those things are keeping us alive!" As Qrow and Dudley bickered, Ruby moved to peek out the window at the train's tail. The grimm were still on pursuit, running relentlessly after the train on all fours. She sighed and turned her attention to the open doorway leading into the next car. Kai followed her gaze, to the passengers in the car, standing around in fear and confusion, uncertain of what was going to happen next. Kai's eyes fell on a little boy, shaking next to his mother, who was cradling an even younger girl in her arms. As if attracted by an invisible force, Kai walked slowly to the next car, and over to the little boy, bending down in front of him.

Kai: "Hey there little man. You doing okay?" The boy glanced over to his mother, unsure. Kai smiled at him warmly, "It's okay...I'm a friend", he held out his hand towards the boy. The boy's mother nodded, and he turned to face Kai, slowly placing his own small hand in Kai's. Kai nodded gently, "That's right...so, how are you feeling right now?" The boy looked up at Kai, lips trembling, "I'm...scared".

Kai: "Okay, what's your name?"

Boy: "Cyrus..."

Kai: "Well, Cyrus, do you know who I am?" Cyrus slowly shook his head. Kai took a deep breath, and then he held out his other hand, and his eyes glowed golden, "I'm the Blazing Huntsman" A small fireball appeared in his hands, burning brightly before dying out again. The boy's eyes widened and his face lit up.

Cyrus: "Wooow! Are you really him?" Kai smiled back, "Sure am. And as long as I'm here, I won't let anything happen to you, or your family" Cyrus looked at Kai with wide trusting eyes, "Promise?" Kai placed a hand on the boy's head, ruffling his hair slightly, "It's a promise" Cyrus smiled widely and nodded, returning to his mother's side cheerfully. Kai stood up and walked back to the group, and he saw that everyone in the car has stopped to watch his interaction with Cyrus. Even Qrow and Dudley had stopped bickering. Kai locked eyes with Ruby, and nodded to her, and she nodded back at him in understanding, before moving towards Dudley.

Ruby: "Please, just shut off the turrets. We're trying to help"

Jaune: "Trust us, we know what we're doing" Jaune held out his hands and began to use his semblance on Dudley, who looked on in surprise as his injured arm slowly began to heal. He looked back at the group, and sighed, "Fine"

Nora: "Ren, can you use your semblance to mask everyone on this train? With the guns off and emotions hidden, they might lose track of us"

Ren: "Hmm, I've never attempted to affect this many before"

Ruby: "Well you've never had Jaune's help before"

Weiss: "Of course, he could amplify your aura" Qrow rubbed his chin in thought, "Yeah, that's actually an alright plan..." Suddenly the air shimmered, as Oscar's soul shifted to Ozpin's.

Ozpin: "I'm afraid there's one complication..." He walked forward till he was in the middle of the group, "...Grimm are also attracted, to this" he gestured to the lamp which had been attached to his hip this whole time. The Relic of Knowledge.

Kai immediately frowned, "What?"

Dudley: "What's that?"

Qrow: "None of your business" turning back to face Oscar he asked, "Oz, are you serious?" Yang frowned as well, "Why wouldn't you tell us that?" Ozpin looked down at the floor, "I..."

Ruby: "It doesn't matter right now"

Kai: "Yes it does matter Ruby! There are people on this train, families! Children! And he knowingly put them all in danger!"

Ruby: "Kai calm down"

Kai: "DON'T TELL ME TO CALM DOWN!!"

Qrow: "Woah Kai, your eyes" Kai gasped silently, then fell silent, as his glowing red eyes reverted to their regular blue color. Yang placed a hand on his shoulder, but he shrugged it off and went to stand in the corner.

Ruby: "Look guys, every second we're on board this train, we're putting everyone else in danger. Ren, Nora, get the passengers to the front cars. You'll still mask the emotions and kill the turrets...", her face fell, "...we just can't come with you. If we cut the back cars with us and the Relic on them, we can deal with the grimm. You guys just make sure the rest of the train make it safely to Argus"

Jaune: "One condition..." He walked over to Ruby, with a look of concern on his face, "...only if you promise you'll meet us there" The two team leaders stared at each other, and then Ruby smiled up at Jaune, "Promise"

The group returned to the top as the train left the tunnel. Dudley shut off the turrets on the train, and Blake disconnected the back cars, while Nora and Jaune evacuated the passengers to the front. As soon as the grimm were out of the tunnels, Ruby gave the signal, and Ren; with Jaune amplifying his aura; applied his semblance to mask the emotions of the entire remaining part of the train. Now that the grimm were focused on them, Team RWBY and Oscar began to take care of the manticores, while Kai and Qrow resumed their assault on the sphinx at the very end of the train.

Qrow: "This isn't working, its too damn resilient. Kai..."

Kai: "Fine fine! I'll try to use my semblance...just ground it first, and get everyone out of the way" Qrow nodded, and while Kai charged up his energy for a strike, Qrow dashed at the sphinx, dodging its tail and narrowly avoiding its claws, then, shooting at the head to cause a distraction, lept towards the left wing, slicing it off with his scythe. Roaring in pain, the large grimm swiped Qrow away with its claws, but Qrow transformed into his bird form, flew through the air, then dropped down above the right wing of the sphinx, slashing it off as well.

Qrow: "Alright Kai, now!" Kai's cracked blade glowed with golden flames as he gripped the hilt tightly, holding his stance, "Everyone get down!!" As his friends looked over at him in confusion, Qrow called over to them, "Hurry just do what he says!"

With a grunt, Kai released a mighty swing of his blade to project a horizontal flaming slash at the grimm hoarde. But at the last moment, the color of the flames changed from golden to red. The flames raged on, a burning red wave of destruction, tearing through the sphinx and moving along the length of the train to clear the other grimm as well. The wave crashed into the side of the mountain, and a heap of large rocks began to fall down towards the train.

Kai: "Shit" A particularly large boulder crashed into the train tracks before rolling off the side, leaving a gaping hole in the path of the train. Seeing the danger, Weiss used her glyphs to hold everyone in place, as the train ran over the hole, destabilized, and ultimately swerved off the tracks, crashing into the snowy landscape below.

Qrow: "Everyone okay?" All around in the snow, the group picked themselves up one by one, shaking off the effects of the crash.

Weiss: "I'm fine"

Blake: "Yeah"

Yang: "We're okay" she helped Ruby get to her feet, who took a moment to recover, holding her head in her hands. Kai muttered to himself, "And this is why I didn't want to use my powers in the first place"

???: "Still alive!"

Kai: "Huh?" Everyone turned in shock to look as a small old lady on a cane, walked out of the open doors of the wrecked train. She smiled at the group, "That sure was a close one huh?"
