Chapter 7: Down

Qrow and Kai took shelter from the storm in one of the nearby houses after combing through the town's perimeter again.

Qrow: "Might be best to wait out the storm a little bit, see if it calms down before going back to the house"

Kai: "Yeah sure, whatever" He plopped down grimly on a nearby couch. Qrow looked over at him with concern, before coming over to sit next to him.

Qrow: "Hey, kid. We uh, haven't really gotten to talk about...all this. How you holding up?" Kai snapped, "How do you think, Qrow?" He then sighed, and apologized, "I'm sorry, I just...feel really shitty right now" Qrow sighed deeply, "Yeah, tell me about it" Kai looked up at Qrow in surprise and realization, before letting out a low groan, "Ugh, I'm being such a jerk right now. I'm giving everyone such a hard time because of what we heard from Jinn. I'm so absorbed in my self pity that I can't even see that the others are hurting too. Including you, Qrow." As Qrow sighed again, Kai added, "You were pretty tight with Ozpin..."

Qrow: "Right from my days at Beacon. I devoted my life to him. I was grateful because he gave me something to fight for, a purpose. But it was all a lie. Every single thing"

Kai: "I'm sorry things turned out that way..." Qrow shrugged, speaking slowly, "I'll be fine, kid. Just kinda hard to take in" This time Kai sighed, "Yeah, I get that a lot"

Qrow: "Weiss was right you know. I didn't raise a monster Kai, I raised you" he poked a finger into Kai's chest, "Whatever's inside you, whatever Salem's got in there, it's not the real Kai. Not the Kai we all know and love" Kai gave a small smile, "Thanks Qrow. But it might be a while before I really come to terms with the whole, 'Son of Salem' thing"

Qrow: "Sure, take your time kid" he got to his feet, "Storm's cleared up a little bit, just enough to make it back to the house" Kai slowly followed suit, "Alright, let's go"

As the duo made their way back in the thick snow, they ran into another duo just in front of the house.

Blake: "Hey. Did you guys find anything else?" Qrow shook his head, "We're still the only ones alive here. What about you guys?"

Yang: "We found a wagon in one of the houses not too far from ours. I can hook it up to Bumblebee and we can be on our way once this storm clears up" Qrow nodded, "That's good. We should get back inside, get some rest. It's been a long day" With that Qrow opened the door and headed inside, with Blake following just behind him. As Kai moved to enter the house as well, Yang grabbed his arm.

Yang: "Kai. We need to talk" Kai let out a small sigh, "Can't it wait, Yang? I'm not really in the mood for..."

Yang: "No Kai. It can't" Kai finally turned to look at her, sensing the urgency of her tone, "O-kay...what's the matter?".

Yang: "I'll be blunt. I want to know why you've been keeping secrets from me and everyone else" Kai blinked, "What secrets are you talking about?" Yang frowned, "Don't play dumb Kai. You didn't tell anyone about the visions with Salem, or about the malfunction with your powers." Kai sighed and ran a hand through his dark hair, "I just...didn't want you guys to worry, that's all"

Yang: "Seriously? I'm sick of everyone deciding what we should or shouldn't know. We're all in this together, Kai. No more lies and half-truths. We tell each other everything. Especially something as important as Salem coming into your mind" She shook her head, "I noticed you weren't sleeping too well, and I asked you about it. But you told me everything was fine. You straight up lied to me"

Kai: "I'm sorry Yang, but you have to understand. That imformation would've caused confusion and fear among us. And after our win at Haven Academy everyone was in such high spirits, I didn't want to change that..."
