Peering through the window I watched as Kenzie's car reversed from the driveway and I pressed a button in my walkie talkie activating the talk mode. ''Agent baseball face, our target has left the premises, I repeat our target has left the premises our mission is a go.'' I said seriously as I heard Diego groan on the other side. ''Why am I called 'Agent baseball face' again Evelyn?'' I chuckled and answered his question. ''Because baseball is your life Mr. Diego Martin,'' I said in a 'DUH' tone.
''Alright, here's the plan,'' Diego paused as I heard a 'thud' come from his end. ''Wow, not even an 'Are you okay?' Eve, how rude of you.'' He said and quickly started talking before I could ask him what happened. ''So, you and I are going to convince my dad if we can spend the day with Kenzie and our friends and if she wants to invite anyone else she can, and then we'll act like that's all we planned for the day and boom surprise her.'' I started laughing at his plan not because it was horrible but because it was obvious.
''I'm sorry-'' I paused to control my laughing and covered my mouth, I took a deep breath and then continued. ''It's too obvious agent bf, we have to do the unexpected, the forbidden, th-'' Diego interrupted my speech. ''The forbidden? Yeah that's taking my mind everywhere.'' 'This boy.' I thought to myself.
''Okay, how about we'll ask my parents and yours this afternoon and right now we'll plan possible ideas that aren't too obvious.'' I proposed forth. ''Yeah that work, see you soon Eve.''
''Okay, so we'll go ice skating–''
''No, you know Kenzie hates the cold.''
''Well how about the arcade then Dad?''
''No it's my baby's 16th birthday it has to special and memorable.''
For the past 20 minutes we all had to put up with the possible ideas and arguments coming from Diego and his dad. My stomach rumbled as I got up to get something to eat, suddenly I got an idea and quickly sat back down. ''Guys,'' I said but both Martin's were too busy arguing to hear me. ''Guys'' I tried again. ''GUYS!'' I almost yelled out, catching both Martin's attention. ''How about we do a baking contest? I mean think about it Kenzie loves baking and loves food, so how about we do a baking contest and make a competition between two teams that out of the teams whoever wins has to do whatever the birthday girl says because we all know how cruel Kenzie can be.'' Everyone seemed to be thinking or agreeing about the idea.
''What about the night plans?? A party or something?'' Mr. Martin asked me as Diego and I shared a look. ''Well, at night we'll all have a party doing the things Kenzie loves and the food will be all the things Kenzie loves while the theme will be something Mom and Dad can choose.'' Diego said as I nodded at his words.
''And we'll do this all the day before her birthday, on the 19th of May.'' I said as everyone looked a little confused. I chuckled softly and then did a small evil laugh.
Looking back at everyone I told them my idea. ''See Kenzie will think that's all for the day because we all will act like we're busy the next day which is her birthday, we'll tell her that on her birthday which is the 20th of May we all have something to do or we want her to enjoy it the way she wants with people who aren't family because she's going to be 16 and so at midnight we'll reveal her ultimate birthday gift...'' I paused as Diego jumped in, filling the gap. ''Which will be her brand new and first car.'' Diego said as Mr. Martin cut in. ''Which she can only drive when she gets her drivers license''
''So what do we think yeah or nah?'' Diego and I asked as everyone nodded their heads. ''Any questions?'' We both asked as I threw him a creeped out look. ''I swear I could mistake you guys as twins if it weren't for the hair and eye colors if I weren't related to you Evie.'' My mum said. Diego laughed as I smiled happily.
The plan seemed great and we had about 2 weeks of preparation, now we have about 1 week and 3 days left. Diego got up and gave me his hand, I grabbed it as we raced towards his car excited to start planning. We both wore our seatbeats as he started the engine and turned up the volume of the radio.
I flicked through my phone and watched as Kenzie had updated her story on Instagram, it was a video of her and Nevaeh having ice cream and laughing their heads off. I smiled knowing that Nevaeh was the perfect one for this group: Kenzie was the advice giver, Diego was the crazy protective one but he always knew how to make you feel better, Nevaeh? She was the one that probably was the relatable and easy going one, you could literally tell her anything and not be afraid of her judging you. And me? Well, Diego always told me I was the glue of the group which I do not believe but seeing as all other titles were either taken or did not fit me I couldn't really say anything.
I scrolled down the page and watched as Diego had posted his last match's photo and a video with the whole team cheering him goodbye. I liked the post and read thru the comments, most saying 'Good luck' and 'Don't forget you played for our team before there's', etc.I watched as there was a comment from Sebastian that had gotten pinned. I scrolled down the page and watched as Dawn made a video of her having a party and celebrating Diego's departure from the school's team saying that it was better for the team.
My ears listened to the footsteps coming my way as Diego grabbed my phone and switched it off, looking annoyed at me. I sighed as he shook his head and walked away from me.
