"I just want to go home already." I said for what might have been the 100th time of the day as Kaleb sat next to me in my math class. "Slept late?" He asked as I nodded. "This is so unfair, I mean I clearly thought we were going to have a teachers only day but no here we are and all I wanna do is go home and lay in bed and cry or eat ice cream." I told him and lay my head in my arms.
"Are you feeling okay?"
"Yeah, I think so." I thought back about the previous 2 nights where we celebrated Kenzie's birthday and the grumpiness on her face that quickly changed to happiness the moment she saw Alisha. I chuckled at her name, not that it was a weird or funny name but because my middle name was almost Alisha and her name is actually Alisha. 'Thank God my middle name is Anaya.'
I watched the clock as the teacher came to our table. "Are you two alright? You know what to do?" Our math teacher asked. "Yeah, yeah we are." Kaleb said and looked at me. "Um, but Evelyn doesn't feel so well, so I was wondering if I could take her to the nurses office." My eyes widened and I shook my head. "Ah, yes okay, yeah you may leave." The teacher said as Kaleb packed his things. I followed in suit as he stood up and waited for me.
A few people watched us as I got up and grabbed my bag, placing it on my shoulders. "Let's get this over with,'' I mumbled as we started to make our way to the nurse's office. A couple of students walked in the same direction we were going in before heading towards the gym.
We entered the nurse's office as I saw a few students leaving the office. "Hey Mrs. Hudson, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind just checking my temperature and just allowing me to stay a couple minutes in the office seeing as I don't really feel well." I told the receptionist lady at the front desk as she nodded and sent Kaleb a knowing smile.
"Yes, it's okay dear." She said as she looked between Kaleb and I. "And will this young gentleman be staying with you?" She asked as I looked at her and then at Kaleb unsurely. "Yes, uh if that's okay with you?" This time Kaleb spoke. "Yeah, um it's okay some company would be nice," I said as he chuckled at my response.
Mrs. Hudson nodded and pointed to the nurses room where students rested and spent their time until they no longer felt unwell or they were going home. We walked together as a few teachers gave us a look but continued working. "Thanks for staying with me," I said to Kaleb as soon as we settled on the nearest bed; we both sat next to each other as the view in front of us was the library.
"No problem, besides my mum always told me to make sure to lead my dates to the door." He said and chuckled. "Well your mum is raising a nice guy, I mean most guys nowadays have no manners and don't know how to treat a girl. . . I guess I got lucky with having Diego in my life because otherwise I'd be a total lost cause without him." I told him as he shifted in his seat, moving to face me. I did the same.
"Yesterday we spent the day just letting Kenzie do whatever she wanted for her birthday and then at night we just did a small party. The funniest part of the night, actually midnight, was when Kenzie went to bed she woke up to someone 'breaking in' her room. S-she, oh my God, she screamed so loudly and then when the light was switched on she screamed again and then started crying when she saw her girlfriend." I told him as he smiled.
"So her girlfriend....." He left me to fill in the blank of the sentence, "Alisha, Alisha Prakash she and Kenzie met on a trip that the Martins went on and they quite literally bumped into each other." My voice filled the silence as a teacher walked in.
"Evelyn, honey how are you feeling?" It was Mrs. Minerva, who Diego and I called Minnie, the nurse and she was also a teacher of history for year 13's. "Okay, I just feel kind of sick but I'm sure I'll be fine." I told her as she nodded and looked at Kaleb. "Oh, I feel fine, just moral support." She paused and then spoke. "Alright, just this once I'll allow you to be here but otherwise this never happened."
