the sky looked nearly rueful in it’s demise, the creaking floorboards told tales of their former splendour as the sounds shifted from place to place.

rosalyne felt herself sink into the plush seat, with borrowed clothes on her back and a rather thin blanket on her lap, barely covering her feet.

you crouched on the ground, ripping up old newspapers, the ink had faded and the stories long forgotten, throwing them in between the small logs in the unlit fireplace. flicking in a match or two before the small sparks danced along the charred wood, filling up the hearth in a golden glow that was empty just mere moments ago.

“there,” you said quietly. watching the smoke rise up the chimney.

“i hope you won’t catch a cold.”
“i don’t think i will.” she responded, the faint clatter of her teeth reached your ears.

who better than she would have developed an immunity to the cold?

the room grew brighter with the new warmth, literally. you glanced at the windows, the curtains drawn closed. the sheer linen material showing you the obscure shape of the outside trees.

“i’ll trust your word for it. though, if you do!”

“i won’t, i won’t,” she smiled, she couldn’t help it. not now. you leaned on the chair’s left armrest, sitting on it. rosalyne almost wanted to lean against your arm that held you balanced, but decided against it as suddenly as the thought came to her.

she moved to the tip of the seat, holding her hands up in front of her to the fire.

“your hair hasn’t dried yet,” you noticed, speaking your thoughts so randomly it felt humiliating.

“it hasn’t.” she said monotonously, turning to face you slightly.
.
.
.
“may i?”

you regretted, you regretted everything. your entire existence―goodness why do you have to be so dramatic? who would ask such a question anyways? okay, just say it was nothing and,

“of course.” she said, now understanding your stifled laughs and quick smiles when rosalyne has spoken of things that made less than sense. it was amusing.

though she was more than glad she was not the one to say such foolish things anymore.

if what you were doing could be called foolish.
rosalyne thought of it, others might presume it be difficult to go about, maybe even improper.
but she found it endearing in the silliest of ways.

"okay." you breathed as you took the towel from the backrest of the chair almost reluctantly, the place where she left it moments earlier. she moved closer, just a little.

you gently dried the loose strands that still stuck to the sides of her face, the gentle curls towards the ends.

"your hair is really pretty, do you know that?"

"i do know that," she said quietly "but, thank you."

to her it felt comfortable, like a lover's caress. something she could fall asleep to, something she did not want to end.

was this where it all started?
