Chapter 19

The hearing is today. I spent my first night in the Curtis house which wasn't that bad honestly. Pony and I listened to music and talked before falling asleep. I look through my clothes while Pony is in his closet. I smile while pulling out a dress that I had gotten a while ago. Maybe Johnny's jacket can go over it.

I walk into the bathroom, and I get dressed, still fits. I walk back and Pony blushes while looking at me. I fix my hair while smiling at Pony, "fine anything?" I ask him and I walk closer to him while picking up Johnny's jacket. I put it on, and I help Pony pick an outfit.

After Pony changes, we walk downstairs to see Soda and Darry in suits. "Come on, let's go," Darry says before we walk out to his car. We are all visibly nervous. Pony and I sit in the back while Darry starts driving to the courthouse.

I look out the window and watch as we drive while playing with my dress. This is so stressful. I am about to fight for my dead brother against the Socs. Once we pull up and park, Pony and I climb out of the car before walking in. Soda and Darry sit in a row behind the big table Pony, a man and I are at. I bite my lip nervously while the Socs walk in together staring at Pony and me.

"Court is in session," the judge says, and I sit up while looking up at her. She calls Pony up for him to give his side of the story. "Ponyboy Curtis, 14. He was chasing us, he grabbed me, he started to drown me. I told (Y/n) and Johnny to run but they caught up to both of them. After a while I blacked out, then woke up to Johnny shaking with his switch out." He starts and the Judge cuts him off "thank you, Ponyboy," she says and looks at me "Ms. (Y/n)" she says, and I stand up.

I walk over and sit in the box. I sigh "(Y/n) Cade, 14. well, we were at the park, after a while Bob and his group pulled up, clearly drunk. I stayed with the boys till they threatened us. We threatened back till they started chasing us. They caught up to Pony, then me, then Johnny. They were drowning Pony, one of the boys tried to slit my throat with a blade and they were going to beat up my brother, Johnny. He ended up cutting me then threw me to the ground before running away. I woke up after Ponyboy and that is all I remember," I say, and she nods. 

"Thank you," I nod back and go back over to Ponyboy.

They call up Cherry and I look at her nervously while she sits down. Everyone's face is started to become shiny with sweat. "Cherry Valance, 16. I could have made it simpler for the fight not to happen," she starts while looking at Pony and me. "Yes, there was an argument, because, Uh, my boyfriend" she sighs "showed up and he was mad that we were with the other boys," she says and explains everything about Bob.

Pony gets called up again and I sit back while Randy stares at me. I notice and I realize he is next to speak. Pony says some things about Johnny and comes back. Randy gets called up and I cross my arms. "Randy Adderson, 18. They made us mad, we went looking for them, to teach them a lesson. We got there and the argument happened, then we chased them. Bob grabbed Pony while I grabbed (Y/n), I took out my switch and only meant to threaten her with it. I never intended to cut her," he says and looks at me. The judge sends him back while Pony and I look back at Darry who nods at us.

I sit back and wipe my sweat with a tissue before looking at the ceiling. I get called up one more time and the judge asks to look at my cut. I nod and I walk up. She looks at it and mumbles to herself. When she is finished, I walk back to my seat and sit down. The stress is building in the room. 

"Ponyboy Curtis, Not Guilty" she starts, and Pony holds my hands "(Y/n) Cade, not guilty" she smiles and Pony hugs me tightly. I hug him back and smile wide.

"I will now place Ponyboy in the custody of his older brother Darrell," The Judge finishes and all the boys scream while I laugh. We all hug each other while huge smiles are painted on our faces. The weights are off our shoulders, and we are finally free. Pony and I just have to finish the rest of the school year and we will be officially free. Well only for the summer of course.
