Chapter 9 - Meet me at the back of the school

I made my way towards the school parking lot. I checked my phone to make sure I came at a reasonable time. The bell should ring in about thirty minutes, so I guess it's reasonable to come to school at this time. The parking lot was already half full. Some student's were bunched up by their cars, some just pulled in, some were hanging out by the fountain and others were going inside of the school.

I looked over at the parking stalls that the HLD's would park at and they were all there except for Deven. Thank goodness. I've been a reck since I got home that afternoon from finding out he was my Deven all along. I don't know if I'm ready to talk to him and frankly I'm just exhausted from the tears, pain and confusion. I could barely even sleep last night and my hair wasn't cooperating with me this morning so, I had no choice but to put it in a messy ponytail and that didn't help much.

I was debating if I should go over to them and say hi or just walk into the school before they noticed my presence. I was just about to walk towards the school building when I heard someone call my name.

I cursed under my breath and turned around expecting to see one of the HLD's but, instead I saw Stephen running towards me. He stopped running a few feet away from me and slowed into a walk.

"Hey Cutie!" He said with a huge smile.

"Hi Stephen, What's up?"

"Nothing much, I didn't get to see you after the party. How did you get home?"

Oh great. Just when I had slightly forgot about what Deven told me the dat after the party, he had to bring it back up! I held back a sigh.

"I called my driver. I was really tired after the performance." I told him and I was pleased that I sounded more convincing then I thought I would.

"Oh, Well what me to take you home today?" I could see hope in his eyes. I groaned internally. I'm not in the mood to be all flirty today. I just need time to myself.

"Thanks Stephen, that's really sweet of you. But, not today. I have plans after school." I saw hurt and rejection cross his face and I instantly felt guilt sweep through me.

"Oh, okay." He said looking at the ground. I felt really bad but, I really wasn't in the mood to hang out after school. Pfft, I wasn't even in the mood to go to school this morning!

I walked over to him and wrapped my arms around his neck. "Maybe next time." I whispered in his ear. I gave him one last squeeze then kissed his cheek before turning around and walking off. When I turned around I could see that all of the HLD's eyes were on Stephen and I. They had their cold death glares on again and their fists were clenched hard. I looked back at Stephen and he seemed to notice them glaring at us because he was smirking back at them.

I opened my mouth to ask Stephen why they were killing him with their eyes but, someone came to my side and wrapped their arm around my waist, before I could. I didn't need to look up to know who it was. The familiar smell of soap and axe filled my lungs as he held me close to his side.
