"Brandon?"
Kira and Keene had decided to use their first free period to go the school's library, where they were hoping to check out the historical archives. But we're shocked to see a tall, muscular, boy with dark hair already on one of the computers.
"Keene?"
"What are you doing here?" Keene asked. "Did you finally decide to let out your inner history geek?"
Brandon chuckled. "Something like that. ...Who's your friend?"
"Hi, I'm... I'm..." Kira couldn't get the words out. Damn't! I used to be good at this, she mentally groaned. Why does everyone in this school look like a star from a Netflix series? And I'm just... me. It doesn't make sense!
"Kira," said Keene. "She's new. Kira, this is Brandon Nichols, Chelsea's idiotic and spineless boy toy."
"You're... dating her?" Kira asked in disgust.
"Not exactly," said Brandon sheepishly. "Not by choice, at least. Breaking up can be... difficult. ...Why? What did she do now?"
"She..." Kira hated to even admit what happened. How Chelsea had beaten her so easily. She had never been so scared in her life.
"She tried to beat the crap out of her," Keene rolled her eyes.
"Why did she... no, don't answer that," said Brandon.
"Yeah," said Keene, "you already know why. Because you're letting a nutcase control your life." She turned to Kira. "He's completely whipped by her."
"I'm also Keene's cousin," said Brandon. "Not that she was going to ever mention that. Huh, Keene?"
"Only if I had to," Keene glared at him.
"Uh, it's okay," said Kira. "We're just here to look someone up in the archives."
"Who's that?"
"My neighbor," said Kira. "Sam LaRusso."
Brandon gave them a huge grin. "Ms. LaRusso? I may have already beaten you to the punch!"
"Why were you researching Ms. LaRusso?" Keene asked, raising her eyebrow.
"She said something to me today, while she was fixing my Challenger that made me curious," Brandon shrugged smugly.
"Did you find anything?" asked Kira.
"Oh, yeah!" Brandon smirked. "Check it out!"
Kira and Keene walked over to the computer screen, where there was an article highlighting "The Cobra Massacre of 2019".
"Ms. LaRusso was a member of a dojo called Miyagi-Do," said Brandon. "They were the only ones who ever stood up to Cobra Kai! They would save, protect, and train kids that the Cobras would bully. It all came to a head though on the first day of school in 2019. A huge fight broke out, because, get this, Ms. LaRusso fell for one of the Cobras and his insane girlfriend started a huge fight to get even with her. By the time the fight was over, Ms. LaRusso's dojo had won, but the boy she'd fallen for was kicked off a third floor stairway that put him in a coma. From what Ms. LaRusso let slip to me earlier, I think his name was Miguel."
"Who did that to him?" Kira asked in shock.
"It doesn't say his name or which dojo he was a member of," said Brandon, "but apparently the dude was arrested for it."
"What about the crazy girl who started the fight?" Keene asked. "She sounded way too much like your girlfriend."
"Don't remind me," Brandon groaned. "It doesn't give her name either. But it does say she was kicked out of school for almost a year. The only names mentioned are Samantha LaRusso, Eli Moskowitz, Demetri Alexopoulos, Aisha Robinson, Mitch MaCalister, and Chris Ramsey. And it does not say which dojos, other than Ms. LaRusso, that they were a part of."
"Someone's covering something up," Kira frowned.
"Give you one guess who," Keene sighed. "Cobra Kai strikes again."
"They were heroes," said Kira.
"What?" Brandon asked.
"Ms. LaRusso and all of Miyagi-Do," said Kira. "They fought to help people."
"And they were badass about it," said Brandon, smiling in appreciation.
"...But if they won the fight," said Kira. "...Why did they give up?"
"I don't know," Keene sighed. "I wish they hadn't. It sounds like they weren't scared of anything. We could use people like them now."
"Why don't you try asking Aunt Tory to see if she can do some digging for us," said Brandon. "If we could prove that the Cobras doctored anything to cover their tracks..."
"Are you kidding?" Keene laughed. "My mom is terrified of ruining her Law Firm's partnership with Cobra Kai Inc to ever do anything to jeopardize it. If we want find out what really happened, we'll have to do it ourselves."
"I could ask Ms. LaRusso about it, when I head home this afternoon," said Kira. "If anything..."
"What?" Keene asked.
"...maybe she could train us like her old dojo used to," said Kira. "That way we could fight back, if we wanted to. I know our parents would be against it, but..."
"I've been disappointing my parents for years," Keene smiled. "They may not care if everyone else is getting screwed over by the Cobra's, but I do. If you can get Ms. LaRusso to agree to it, then I'm in. Let me know as soon as you get an answer either way. I'll AirDrop you my number, so you can text me about it later."
"Me too," said Brandon.
Kira and Keene both gave him an icy glare.
"Hey, I'm sorry for what happened to you, Kira," said Brandon. "I'm ending things with Chelsea once school's over. I don't believe in hurting anyone. But if there's a chance of ending the Cobras, I want to be a part of that."
"Kira..." Keene started.
"Alright," said Kira. "But we can't tell anyone what we're doing other than each other, okay?"
"Definitely!" Brandon smiled.
"...Fine," Keene replied, glaring at her cousin. "Just don't Brandon this up like you do everything else!"
"Since when did my name become a trope?" Brandon sighed.
"Oh, you know when," Keene said as the three of them walked out of the library.
