(13) Her Explanation

"Why have you been here all this time?" I asked her.

"It wasn't safe at home. I couldn't tell you I knew you would try to come with me."

"Why, why wasn't it safe?" I asked her.

"Your father was very dangerous, and I know it seems like I was running away but I came here to find someone." She confessed.

"Well if you knew he was dangerous why would you leave your kids with him?" I asked a little angry.

"As long as I was away he wasn't going to hurt you. Not on purpose at least." She said.

"Well...he's gone." I told her.

"What!?" She asked, her eyes widening.

"I woke up one day, and he wasn't there. The night before, he was drunk." I explained.

"Has he done anything to you or Landon?" She asked.

"No. But the house was burned down, and I think I know who did it." I told her.

"Sweety! I am so sorry I wasn't there." She said hugging me again.

I looked at her. She kind of looked like me. She had the same frizzy, puffy hair as I did except it was longer and straighter.

We both have the same round face and round eyes. And even though it's been a while since I've heard her laugh, that was still the same too.

"It's OK mom." I told her.

"I have just been so on edge." She said wiping her tears sitting down.

"Who was it that you came here for?" I asked her.

"Listen, I don't love your father. He is not only a alcoholic, but he has been unfaithful as well." She told me.

"He's cheated? Why haven't you divorced?" I asked.

"The woman, she got pregnant." She confessed.

"When? Why hasn't anyone told us anything?" I asked stunned.

"Because, it happened around the same time....." She trailed off and looked away.

"Mom?" I questioned.

"It happened the sane time when I got pregnant." She turned back around quickly.

I shook and said, "With Landon...?" I asked.

"With you." She choked crying.

I stood up and shook my head.

"Why haven't you told me?" I asked.

"I couldn't. It wasn't my choice." She said crying.

"Who is she? Does she go to my school?" I asked forcefully.

"I don't know her. I wasn't aloud to meet her and they wouldn't tell me her name." She said sounding sorry.

She looked around then looked up at me, "How did you even know I'd be here?" She asked.

"I was shot. I was paralyzed in the hospital and my nurse, she told me." I told her.

"Kate, Kate Louis." She said to me wiping her tears.

"She said you were old friends." I said to her.

"Old friends my butt." She said angry.

"That's who you were looking for, that's who Johnathan knocked up?" I asked.

"Yes, and I will find her." She said.

"Why are you looking for her?" I asked.

"That girl is not safe with her. And I think, I think I want to adopt her."
