They took your amnesia well.
You'd taken a page out of Sans's book and only told your family exactly what they needed to hear. You told the truth, just not the entire mind bending story.
One bomb-drop at a time.
You didn't want to be over dramatic about your confession. Part of you only wanted to tell one person at a time, that way you only would have to deal with one reaction at a time. In reality though that wasn't possible. You knew they'd gossip to each other, ask each other "did you know?", "what? No, I didn't! Why didn't she tell me?" and so on. Plus, it wasn't like it was hard to get all of them together in one place either. All you had to do was call Toriel and ask when the next time you all were having a family dinner and it was planned for the next night.
You don't think Sans or Papyrus expected you to come clean. Especially not after your talk with Sans. Which you still hadn't spoken with him about since - but, one problem at a time.
Your family took the news well. You expected more pity, like you were so used to from Toriel, but your friends took it in stride. They were worried, obviously, you could tell in the subtleties, but they weren't out right about it.
Undyne made a joke about how easily you lost things while Alphys promised she'd talk to some of her coworkers that dealt more in the medical field. Mettaton said maybe you'd regain them if you went to more of his shows, which Undyne protested immediately. Toriel hugged you and told you they'd come back eventually, which you knew was an empty balm. While Asgore said that they'd all be there for you now like they were for you in the past and how they will be in the future. Later, on a video call with Frisk, they signed about how they knew something was up with you and laughed about how easy you were to read. They reassured you that even if the memories didn't come back you were still family. You were still their older sister, no matter what.
You wondered why you hadn't talked to them all sooner.
At the end of dinner you told Toriel again that, yes, you were making the right decision by living with Sans and Papyrus outside of town. You reassured her that you were eating three times a day, remembering to brush your teeth, and taking care of yourself et cetera. Even if it wasn't completely true, it placated her enough that she sighed in relief and left you alone after one last hug. You adored her, but you appreciated her motherly worry more when you weren't living with her.
When you left with the skeleton brothers, your family reminded you to keep in touch and text any time. Whether you needed something or not.
"Do you feel better?" Papyrus asked on your way back home. He'd been talking about his latest endeavors at work and you'd been happy to listen. You could spend hours just silently listening to Papyrus talk about anything. It didn't matter.
"I do." You admit. It felt like part of the weight resting on your shoulders had lessened. It wasn't completely gone, it probably wouldn't be for a while. But right now you were the lightest you'd been in a long while you think.
Papyrus beams at you, glancing off the road for only a few seconds so you could get the full view of his happiness. It was enough time for the warm feeling to drift over you and you can't stop looking at him. You wanted to ask him how, just being him, felt like a balm to soothe even your greatest fear. He was like the embodiment of sunshine, of happy memories, of hope.
He asks why you're staring. You can't hide your smile when you shake your head and tell him "no reason". You can see his confusion, but it slides off easily in favor of continuing the story he'd paused so he could check in on you.
