A War of Worlds
Chapter Three of Book One
“There really isn't much here.” Selk said.
“Where would life be on this planet?” Algebra asked.
“Maybe they were seeing things.” Ion said.
“I don't think so. I hear noise. Like music and people talking.” Census said.
“Well, let's go! Anything's better than this pile of dirt.” Selk said.
The children followed the noise. It was music. There was a village. It had houses and a school. Only one though. People had stands up, were carrying baskets with fruits in it, and pulling or pushing carts. Nobody had cars, just were walking on their own two feet.
There was one person playing a violin nearby. Algebra saw a glimpse of him. He had midnight-black hair and grey eyes. His eyes looked like he just pulled an all-nighter and had pale skin. He saw Algebra looking and smiled kindly at her. He looked about nine years old. When they made eye contact Algebra felt a pang on her chest and her leg. Where the two brooches were either perched or rested. She saw something that looked like a star on his hand that was holding the bow before a whole crowd of people stepped in front of them. Algebra turned back to her friends.
“Wow. This is one cool village.” Census said.
“Of course it is!You must be new here. Would you like a free sample?” an old man said.
He had a beard, crooked teeth, and grey eyes; but still had a kind face. His hair was grey but he looked strong enough to carry a cart full of meat, which he was.
“My name is Olmec. I sell pork, beef, and chicken. My wife, Nerferta, sells apples, grapes, berries, and other fruits we can grow in our farm. Here, you can have a free sample.” the old man said.
“Tha- thank you.” Algebra said cautiously, remembering about Nylo getting captured.
“Well, don't just stand there saying your thanks. Here you all go.” Olmec gave each child a sample, which was beef and pork on a stick covered in some kind of liquid.
Algebra slowly took a small bite. It was really good, and she didn't feel poisoned at all. She finished it in three more bites. She saw that her friends were also enjoying it.
“See, it's all right. I'd give you more, but I need money.” Olmec said, shamefully.
“It's okay.” Ion smiled sweetly.
“By the way, was that loud noise from your rocket?” the old man said, as he sat down on a bench, dabbing his forehead with a handkerchief.
“Um... yes. Why?” Census curiously asked.
“Well, you might just want to be careful.” he simply said.
The children shared confused looks.
“Excuse me?” Selk said for all his friends.
“Well-” a gun shot sounded.
“What in the heavens?” Olmec suddenly stood up, making his cart almost fall down.
“U-um... don't get mad but... There might be war between our world with yours.” Ion said, looking down.
Olmec's eyes widened.
“What?! Oh, dear! I have to tell Nerferta and get the kids out of here. Quick, everybody, quick! We're going to be in a war! That gun shot is letting us know to get ready!” he shouted.
