A War of Worlds
Chapter Four of Book One
Algebra froze in her seat. The voice was unfamiliar. Was the feeling of two sets of eyes really real. Wait. Two sets of eyes? She slowly turned and almost screamed when one of the figure's hand went over her mouth. It was... Justin?
“It's okay. He's not going to hurt us.” he said calmly.
In front of her eyes was a big, yellow-whitish bear. It had a sun shape on it's head and it's eyes were silver, hard but kind looking. It's ears looked soft but was jagged. The bear walked to the fire. Justin slowly removed his hand from Algebra's mouth.
“Ju-Justin? What is that?” Algebra asked.
“He is a Sunbear. I walking when we bumped into each other. He didn't attack me though.” Justin explained.
“But aren't the creatures here harmful?” Sunny asked her older brother.
“Well, you're wrong. We creatures don't care for loud noises and I did not find your little legend very true. I have never eaten a human being my whole life.” the Sunbear grumbled, his sounded like Algebra's grandfather's voice. Deep but rich and sincere.
“You see guys. The animals here live way before any of our grandmothers or grandfathers were born. He doesn't even know why some of the other creatures are going crazy.” Justin said hoping that the Sunbear wouldn't get angry.
“As for your question little girl.” the Sunbear pointed to Selk.
“When all animals had disappeared. The universe took pity on the poor humans so they had created us. Since the universe had forgotten what we looked like, they had just created new animals. But man-kind were self-fish and greedy and didn't even thank the universe like their ancestors would. So the universe took all the animals left on this planet and hid us in this forest.”
“So could the other animals be taking revenge like the universe did?” Selk asked still cautiously.
“That is unlikely. We animals have been hid away for more than fifty years ago. So it would not make sense why they would start now.” the Sunbear answered.
“Listen. I would love to explain everything to you right now children, but I sense something bad is near. We will go to my camp where the others are waiting.”
“What is your name by the way?” Ion asked to the Sunbear.
“My name is Arsenic.”
“Do you have parents? A last name?” Night asked.
“Like I said. I'll explain everything later.” Arsenic replied.
The children followed the Sunbear. They walked for what felt like a hour or two. Deeper and deeper they went into the forest. Justin walked with Arsenic, both wearing a serious face. Selk and Night jogged in the front and stopped time to time for the others. Census examined the trees while Ion examined the flowers. Algebra was walking with Sunny until the little girl suddenly leaned on her.
“Is something wrong, Sunny?” Algebra asked with concern.
“Nothing. I'm just cold.” sniffled Sunny.
Sunny was right though. Algebra could see her breath every time she breathed through her nose. Which was oddly weird since back at home it would be stinging warm as if was still summer. Algebra caught herself rubbing her arms just now. She put her arms around Sunny so both of them could be warm.
“We are here now children.” Arsenic announced.
He led them through some thick trees. Algebra tried not to gag at the horrible smell coming from somewhere.
