As soon as the elevator doors opened on the third floor Whiskers, the dorm cat, flew between my legs and sat in the corner. Whiskers loved to ride the elevators but most of the time people would pick him up and throw him down the hall. Before leaving the elevator I gave Whiskers a quick pet and headed towards my room.
The moment I tried to open the door I was greeted by a pile of clothes and other small things.
“Eliza?”
“Yes?” Her voice was muffled.
“Can you move the things away from the door?”
“Ooops! Sorry!” Behind the door I heard clothes smack against the wall and something broke. I hope it wasn’t anything important.
Eliza threw the door open and greeted me with a smile. Her hair was a complete mess and she had a sock stuck to her shirt. I almost laughed at how ridiculous she looked.
“Well? Why are you standing there?” Eliza grabbed my hand and pulled me into our room.
Our room, which was usually almost perfectly clean, was a complete mess. Piles of clothes dotted the floor, the little things that hung on the wall were hanging sideways. Our room was a perfect example of what a place looked like after a tornado hit it.
“Eliza? What happened?” Eliza looked at me with apologetic eyes.
“Well some of the boys are coming with us. I wanted to find the perfect outfits.”
“Some of the boys?”
“Well yeah.” She held up a fist. “There’s Finn.” She put up one finger. Finn was the boy that Eliza had had a crush on since she arrived here. Finn was one of the ‘bad boys’ here at Greenwood. He always wore his uniform un-tucked and his hair un-groomed. He had one of those faces you would automatically love. His eyes were the color of the clearest water and his hair looked like pure chocolate. Finn was really skilled in getting what he wanted through talking. “There’s Colton.” I froze as she put up another finger. Colton was the most popular boy at this school. He was the boy Poppy had claimed as hers. Colton had dark brown hair and bright green eyes. Colton was on Greenwood’s football team, yes we had one. Colton had a stronger build and looked tough but he was always so kind. “Then there is Adam, Matt. . . .” Her voice faded off as my mind started to wonder.
An hour or two later, after Eliza and I had gone to dinner we were back upstairs cleaning our room while packing at the same time. My mind kept thinking about Colton.
Eliza had told me there were at least ten of us going. Colton, Finn, Adam, Matt, Eliza, our friend Carrie, Matt’s sister Alexis and two other people from a different school. We were staying in a cabin on the south shore, out on the tip of the island. It was a place I had visit a couple of times before with Eliza’s adopted parents but we only stayed for a day or two. It was a beautiful place and I felt like I belonged there.
Eliza and I had finished packing and cleaning by the time night had descended and the dorm head, Miss Little, had started knocking on everyone’s doors telling us it was time for bed. Eliza and I had changed into our sleepwear and turned off the light. I climbed in bed and pulled the blankets over my head. I was prepared to be cast into darkness.
I was surprised when I woke up and found myself on the beach in the middle of a storm. I was in causal clothes watching as a boy battled a monster in front of my eyes.
The boy was rather tall, muscular and lean. His hair was jet black with a fading grey streak and his eyes the color of the sea. The way he looked made him look like he always got into trouble but he didn’t mean to.
The monster was twice the size of the boy and a mixture of animals. It’s head, beak and wings were that of an eagle, it’s body that of a lion and it’s tail a snake ready to strike. The sight of it terrified me but the boy had a bronze sword ready in his hands.
I sat on the beach watching the boy defeat the monster. It took less then ten minutes. The moment the monster turned into dust the boy’s sword turned into a pen. The boy put away the pen and headed towards me.
I woke up gasping for air. Never in my life had a dream felt so real. Eliza was next to me with a worried look.
“Tab, are you okay?” At first I couldn’t speak so I just nodded. “You sure?”
“Y-yeah. I’m fine. Thanks.” I gave her a small smile and curled myself up into a ball.
“Okay.” I heard Eliza head back to bed as I drifted back into sleep.
That morning I felt extra cautious of the world. The dream seemed so real. And the boy, he looked so similar to. . . .to me.
As the day went on I searched for the boy in the crowd. No one stuck out to me. It was aggravating; the boy felt so familiar.
By the end of the day I wasn’t able to find the boy in my dream. As the hours had passed I tried to convince myself that it was just a stupid dream and the boy wasn’t real.
The next two days passed in a blur. I found myself squirming, once again, in my seat as I waited for the final bell to ring, freeing me from classes for three months. Sure, teachers had given summer assignments but I had plenty of time to work on those.
I had stopped worrying about finding out who the boy was. After all, it was a dream. People have dreams that seem too real and can't tell the difference. I just got confused, that’s all.
That night I laid in my bed staring at the ceiling. Montauk would be a great escape. I could hang out with Colton and tried to get to know him better. The trip would be perfect.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
