I watched the clock as I squirmed in the classroom desk. The desk was covered in a lot sorts of graffiti: A+K, SKOOL SUCKZ!, and sorts of weird pictures I could start to guess what they were. I looked at the clock. It hadn’t changed since the last time I checked. Having ADHD in high school was the worst. I spent the whole day squirming around like a five year old and then would go back to the dorm only to be faced with homework. At least with homework I had found ways to make it fun and creative, keeping my ADHD under control.
To make things worse, I was dyslexic. I sometimes had to have my friends read things to me so I could understand what we were learning about.
If you looked down at my notes, it was all pictures. It was the only way I could remember stuff. I pretty much only needed to hear the lesson and I could have it perfectly memorized, but the teachers always had to write something on the board and never explain it.
Yeah, ‘Skool’ did suck, but it could be worse. I go to a school that is meant for kids with problems, surprised? You shouldn’t be. The school goes by ‘Greenwood Academy: Where Kids Get A Fresh Start!’ I have heard so many parodies of Greenwood’s name, anywhere from Spleenwood to Meanwood. Meanwood? Is that the best people can do? Then again, it is a school for kids with problems.
Students here at Greenwood are as young as five and as old as twenty-three. The ones over eighteen are usually the kids that were dropouts but were caught by their parents and forced to come here. What did I do to get here? I was born.
Most kids come to Greenwood around twelve years old when our brains finally start working, somewhat. I, however, appeared on the door step of the Elementary block. One of the teachers took me in and I have lived here ever since.
No one knows who my real parents are; they only know my name, Tabitha. I have learned to go by Tabby. As for my last name? The teachers named me Tabitha Green. How clever. I hate it.
The bell suddenly rung and caused me to jump out of my seat. I grabbed my bag and ran out of the classroom.
Someone grabbed my arm and pulled me towards them. I turned around to see my best friend, Eliza. She stared at me with the smile that always meant trouble.
“What’s the smile for?” I asked, this only made her smile bigger.
“Summer break is in three days.”
“Yeah. So?”
“We. Are. Going. On. Vacation!” I laughed in her face. Her smile slowly faded.
“I can’t leave the school during break.”
“They let you before.”
“With permission from your parents. I can tell by the look on your face that there will be no parents.”
“But my parents know I will be there. They helped plan this trip. C’mon Tabby, please?”
“I guess I could ask.”
“Thanks!” Eliza gave me a quick hug and ran down the hall screaming something I couldn’t understand. I smiled and headed to Mr. Chamberlain’s office.
Mr. Chamberlain was the guy I had to go to for everything. He was, technically, my guardian. The guy looked like a oversized balloon with salt and pepper hair and dark black eyes. The guy either looked like he was going to pop or going to eat you. Neither was very pleasant.
When I arrived at his office Mr. Chamberlain was mumbling as he threw papers everywhere. He looked like he was ready to pop.
I knocked on the door just loud enough so he could hear. Mr. Chamberlain paused and slowly looked up, his black eyes looking hungry. So it was half and half. Great.
