Ellie followed me throughout the house, like a baby who just learned how to walk. It's not like I'm mad at it, no. I just want her to feel at home, and feel safe. It's been a day since Atlas and Nicolas left. And right now, Ellie's living with me. She doesn't talk much, or even make a small sound. She just stands there, and then moves when I need to do something. Sometimes, she gets up real quick whenever I pass the room.
Is she scared of me? Does she not like me? She's so shy, and I just want her to talk to me. to tell me something. Something about her, anything. I'd take crumbs. I don't like the presence she's giving me. And I want her to open up to me. I want us to be friends.
I grabbed a handful of crackers before going back to the living room. Ellie sat on the sofa, Lewis sitting beside her.
Lewis is a cat, and cats know feelings. And the only time Lewis would sit beside me is when I'm sad or troubled. Right now? He's sitting pretty close to Ellie. I sighed.
Ellie looked around, jumping out of her seat.
"No, stay." I said, walking up to her with a handful of crackers. "Here, have one." I smiled. She looked at it and gulped, a smile forming her lips. I placed the crackers on our small table.
Ellie is petite, she's very vulnerable, she looked like a doll, and if I was guessing— she was probably a model.
If I want this friendship to work, we both need to open up and try our best to talk to each other. Right now, I'm stepping out of my comfort zone for her.
"Ellie, we need to talk, you know?" I said. She nodded and Lewis circled her. She smiled at the cat, but the smile fell.
"I'm sorry." She started.
Ellie has a thing with apologizing, same as me. That's something we both have. I smiled and sat down on the sofa while the movie played. I tapped the side of the sofa, telling her to sit.
She sat uncomfortably. Trust the process, Oceana.
"So..." I trailed off, not knowing what to say.
I didn't practice anything, I seriously just went for it. I cursed myself, making a note for the future me to plan stuff first before actually doing it.
"This is all new to me." She said, biting her lip. I nodded at her, feels very new to me too. "I mean... a friend, or something."
Oh. She doesn't have any friends... that's okay. I can be her friend. I gave her a soft smile and took a cracker, breaking it into two, I gave her half.
"We can be friends, Ellie. You have my cracker, while I have yours. And as long as I'm still alive, I will be your friend." I bite my cracker, pretending it was bigger. She laughed softly and ate hers.
Step one, making friends. Done.
Next step, being comfortable.
"Ellie, your home is my home now, okay? I want you to feel at home. Put your feet up on the sofa, I don't care, because I'd do it too. Wake up early to make pancakes, go." I said. She nodded and nodded throughout my sentence.
