“What!?” Junlin asked his friends the next morning after the awards at breakfast. “They’re back together!?”
“Yaxuan I’m so sorry,” Yaowen apologized, patting his shoulder.
“It’s fine,” Yaxuan answered with a forced smile, when in fact he was completely unhappy.
“No it’s not!” Haoxiang shouted. “He played you just to get back to Jiaqi.”
“Well I guess it was my fault for agreeing to date someone with a boyfriend,” he ran his hands through his hair as he held back tears.
“Well what about you Zhenyuan? How do you feel?” Junlin asked him.
“It sucks but I guess if Jiaqi loves Chengxin, then there’s nothing I can do about it. I guess he loves him and not me.” Zhenyuan shrugged.
“You’re not mad?” Junlin continued.
“A bit hurt but,” he shrugged, “that’s life.”
“And Chengxin isn’t coming for breakfast today? I guess he’s at Jiaqi’s.” Yaowen sighed. “How do you want us to treat him when he’s back Yaxuan?”
“Treat him like…like we always do.” he nodded painfully. “Don’t be mad at him, I’ll be fine.”
They all looked at him sympathetically, before Chengxin walked in a few minutes later.
“Hey guys,” Chengxin greeted them, “How are you doing?”
“Where are you coming from?” Haoxiang asked coldly with his arms folded.
“Haoxiang,” Yaxuan reprimanded him.
“Does it matter where I’m coming from?” Chengxin answered. He swung his coat over one of the chairs and grabbed his meal card, then disappeared to get his breakfast.
“I said be nice to him,” Yaxuan reminded his friends.
“Fine it’s just really hard.” Junlin answered and took a deep breath. “But we’ll try to be nice.”
Chengxin returned with his plate and sat down, then started eating with his friends. They started to converse casually, but the more Yaxuan heard Chengxin’s voice, the more emotional he became until he exited the entire conversation. He stopped talking and didn’t want to.
“You okay Yaxuan?” Chengxin asked him after noticing his silence.
Yaxuan removed his glasses and wiped the tears that were pricking at the corner of his eyes. “Chengxin I think we need to talk.”
The boys looked at each other curiously, hoping things wouldn’t become dramatic soon.
“Talk? Sure.” Chengxin put his chopsticks down.
Yaxuan was the first to stand up and stood a distance away from any of the tables, and Chengxin followed him. They stood somewhere near the exit.“I heard that you’re back with Jiaqi,” Yaxuan told him painfully and forced a smile. “I’m not mad at you, but I wish you at least explained to me yourself. You should have at least sat down with me and told me you don’t love me anymore…”
“That’s not it.” Chengxin shook his head. “It’s not that I don’t love you anymore, it’s that…”
“You love Jiaqi more.” Yaxuan finished Chengxin’s statement and tears started to come out of his eyes.
“I didn’t want to tell you myself because I was afraid of this, I was afraid you’d cry and I didn’t want to see you cry.” He said, looking down at the floor. “I didn’t mean to make you feel used.”
“But that’s how I feel.”
Chengxin rubbed his elbow. “I’m sorry, I wish there was something I could do…”
“There’s nothing you can do. You’ve really hurt me but I forgive you.” Yaxuan told him, but Chengxin wondered if it were real or not.
