Chapter 5 - One More Chance

Kara was barely able to sleep a wink that night with all the excitement taking over her. Alex's plan had everything to work out and then Lena would be safe, alive again. She could barely hold her heart in her chest with anxiety. The day had barely dawned, and she was already looking at Alex, waiting for her to wake up so they could leave.

"Kara, why are you staring at me? I haven't even opened my eyes properly..."

"I'm waiting for you to wake up. I want to go to the DEO right now."

"Did you sleep, Kara?"

"A little... I couldn't relax."

"As I imagined."

Alex then got up, took a shower to wake up and went with Kara to the DEO. She was barely ready and Kara had already taken her in her arms and flown as fast as she could. Anxiety devoured her inside, she couldn't contain herself.

"Kara, I know you're very anxious, but you need to breathe. We will have to do things very calmly and carefully, we cannot leave room for anything to go wrong. Basically, it's a very simple plan, but any mistake can ruin everything. Especially if Lena hears you're back or sees you ahead of time... you understand that, don't you?"

"Yeah, I get it. When we go back in time, I have to head back from the arctic straight here, making sure no one who can warn Lena sees me... is that okay?"

"Yes, that's exactly it. Okay, there's Brainy... let's go."

Brainy joined the Danvers sisters and went over the entire plan. He tried to go into the details of how they would do that time travel, but Alex said it wouldn't be necessary to explain again, she had already passed all the information to Kara."

"So, are you ready?"

The two nodded, then formed a sort of circle holding hands. Brainy with each of the sisters in each hand, Kara with the other hand held by Alex. Brainy then activated his Legion ring and in a snap, they were in their bodies from the past.

Kara, in what seemed like the blink of an eye, found herself again dressed as Supergirl, inside the Fortress of Solitude. She understood then that it had worked, she was the day before the tragedy that took Lena's life. Her heart was pounding wildly in her chest. She opened up her communication with Alex and informed her that she was going to meet her and Brainy.

Kara stormed into the DEO. Brainy was making the final adjustments to the bottle.

"This bottle is programmed for only Lex Luthor's DNA, which means that no matter how many people are in the room, the bottle will only hold him. I made one more adjustment too, to ensure our complete success: once you install the bottle in place and crank it, it will be invisible to human eyes. The same technology we use on our legion ship."

"Great! One less thing to worry about." Alex looked pretty excited about her plan.

"Now this is where Kara comes in... you'll have to install the device inside Luthorcorp's office without anyone seeing you."

"Kara, in the middle of the night, Brainy is going to blind Lena's room's security cameras and locks for a few minutes. We're going to need you to enter the balcony, install the bottle somewhere, and leave without a trace... okay?"

Kara was quite nervous, but she nodded. Now they would only have to wait until dawn to execute the plan. She felt very tired, but the anxiety kept her awake, the desire to see Lena again exploded inside her.

That early morning, before the sun rises, they did everything as planned. Kara didn't even wear her Supergirl costume so as not to draw attention, she thought it best. At Brainy's signal, she flew like lightning to the balcony of Lena's office, opened the door, and plugged the bottle under the big sofa. Upon triggering it, she became invisible. There was really no way to discover the device there. This whole operation went very quickly, but before leaving, Kara paused for a moment next to Lena's chair. All that environment had her perfume, Kara was lost for a moment, closing her eyes and breathing in that perfume that she missed so much.
