"I bet I can beat you there," Y/N challenged, tying up her old shoes. With scabbed knees, bruises all over, and grass stains on clothes, the girl had already had a long day. Though, there was still some fun to reap.

"As if," Keith grumbled, also sliding on his shoes. "No one beats me in races."

"Yeah, well, I've been practicing." Y/N slung her bag over her shoulders and stood up. "First one to the stream by your house gets the others' dinner."

Keith's stomach rumbled at the thought. He and his dad had been short on food for a long time now. No, he wasn't going hungry to the point he was sick. He was grateful for that. But, his growing appetite couldn't always be met. The idea of getting Y/N's dinner portion sounded pretty okay. Losing his didn't sound so great.

He wasn't going to step down from a challenge. "Fine. You're on."

Y/N took off without a second thought. Keith followed, pushing his legs to keep up. The stream wasn't far from the school, only being a five minute run if they really pushed themselves.

No matter how hard he tried, it just seemed Keith couldn't get ahead of his friend. Anytime he felt he was gaining on her, she sped up a little more.

In triumph, the girl jumped into the stream. Keith landed in it just seconds after her, but he really had lost. Totally annihilated in a race he was so confident he'd win. To say his ego and confidence wasn't majorly damaged would be a lie.

"Your dinner is mine, Kogane." Y/N's mischievous smile broke through as she walked for the opposite bank of the stream, scrambling up the muddy slope. She held out a hand to Keith and helped haul him up.

The kids now approached the Kogane home, exhausted and covered in mud. Keith's dad appeared from the door with raised brows, but a smile nevertheless. He was always happy to see his son still had one loyal friend to embark on adventures with, no matter the mess they came home in. "You two are not coming inside yet."

"Agggh," They both knew what was coming.

A full body hose down with freezing cold water. It wasn't great, but with the promise of dinner on the other side, they put up with it.

The kids waited patiently as Keith's dad threw together what he could for dinner. A little sadly, he set it down in front of the kids. "There you go, kiddos."

Sighing, Keith slid his meal to Y/N.

Keith's dad tilt his head in question and stifled a laugh. "Hungry are you, Y/N?"

The girl looked between her food and then back to Keith who now looked upset. "Keith lost the race. Loser gets the others' dinner."

Keith's dad sent him a sorry glance. It had been Keith's decision to turn his dinner into a challenge and he'd lost fair and square. That had been Keith's decision and he had to live with it. That was how Keith best seemed to learn—to make mistakes and live with the consequences.

The pair sat outside on the porch to the small, rickety place. If there was one thing Keith really enjoyed about having Y/N as a friend was that she never cared. Never cared about where he lived, the food they had or the clothes he wore. Y/N never had the slightest passing judgement running through her. She was just happy to be his friend while everyone else seemed to make fun of him.

"I'll be right back, I have to wash my hands." Y/N got up quickly and dissappeared inside.

"Okay." Keith watched her walk through the door and then he turned his attention back to the sunset.

Y/N snuck around inside, looking for Keith's dad. She eventually found him sitting in a chair, reading over some documents with a stern expression. She tapped at the door and he looked up, shocked.
