Something So Small

Keith was fighting, trying to calm himself down. His chance to end this war once again, to make things right, was coming. Never once would he have thought he'd be quite literally shaking hands with death willingly. He never saw an intergalactic war resting on his ability to die and hopefully, come back to life. To say he was beginning to feel the pressure would be a painfully large understatement.

All he could hope now was that the tech Y/N and Pidge had integrated with his suit was going to work. If it didn't, well, then this was going to be the end. A few years ago, he wouldn't have really cared how this all ended. As long as he played his part, he didn't care what happened. But now, for better or worse, he did care about what happened to himself. He wanted to make it out of this alive because he had Y/N, a life he wanted to build, things to do, places to see.

That was where most of his anxiety was stemming from. It was Y/N. It was less about the fact he feared never seeing her again and more about the fact that he knew she had plans she wasn't telling him. That night she had come to visit him, Keith knew she was holding something back. He didn't want to push, but now he was partially wishing he had.

Inside Honerva's mind, everything was playing out just as it had the first time Keith had been here. All up until now.

"You were their leader!" Keith yelled up at the massive robeast, one in the likeness of Zarkon. "They trusted you and you betrayed them! You don't deserve the black lion."

The mechanical giant raised its sword and Keith braced himself. Now was the time. He knew this time, the black lion wouldn't show up to save him. This time, he asked the lion not to. As far as he could tell, the lion understood. Their bond went deep enough now.

Instead of that sword coming down onto him, the robeast stopped. The air slowly began to fill with a crackling laughter. Keith felt sick to his stomach immediately.

It was Honerva. She was here.

"What's going on?" Keith began to panic. He was about to let it happen. His chance to let the robeast take him down was right there at his fingertips. And now, things weren't playing out like they were supposed to.

The laughter continued, swirling around the paladins in a distorted sort of way. "Oh how you paladins just don't know when to stop."

Everyone was confused. What was Honerva talking about? What was going on? Keith scanned the expressions of his friends. All of them were equally as afraid and confused as he was. Except...for Pidge. She seemed calmer than normal. Keith wanted to ask her what was going on, but he had no chance to.

Something began to flicker near them. An image of some kind. It jumped around erratically, fizzling in and out. That was, until it finally began to stableize right beside Keith. It was Y/N.

His breath hitched and he reached out to touch her but his hand simply went through her frame like she was a ghost. "Y/N?" He asked.

The apparition of the girl lift her head and she looked around. A little ways away, a dark bundle of energy took the form of Honerva. This definitely had not happened before.

"What are you doing here?" Keith seethed. "You have to get out."

Y/N looked to Keith. An expression spread across her features that broke his heart. Everything made sense now. It was never meant to be him all along. It was her. She was the one who was going to be turning herself in. That knowledge plagued his system, legs weakening and lungs burning.

"Such a fool to have come here," Honerva snarled. "I will say I am impressed by your ability to return here."

"You know there's no reality for you, Honerva. Stop this." Y/N plead. "You know Lotor isn't coming back."
