Chapter 4: The Unknown

It's a beautiful sunny day and Emily feels like she is on top of the world, after spending the day with Sue the day before she feels different.

(Emily walks downstairs and greets her family with a big smile)

*Lavinia- "Well someone looks cheery today, speaking of which where did you disappear to yesterday, I went by the oak tree and you weren't there?".

*Emily- "Oh I was with a friend".

*Mrs. Dickinson- "A friend? well that's new who is it?".

*Emily- "Susan Gilbert".

*Lavinia- "Well you better watch out".

*Emily- "Why?".

*Lavinia- "Austin has taken an interest in Sue".

*Emily- "So?".

*Lavinia- "He's gonna ask her out any day now".

Emily was unsure of the feeling she had knowing her brother was planning to ask out her new friend, was she jealous? But why would she be jealous it's not like they won't be able to hang out anymore? She was lost in her thoughts.

*Mrs. Dickinson- "Em..... Emily?.....Emily!

*Emily- "Oh sorry".

*Mrs Dickinson- "You need to finish your morning chores".

*Emily- "Tell me again why we can't just get a maid?".

*Mrs. Dickinson- "Emily as I've told you before we are perfectly capable of doing things ourselves".

*Emily- "Then why doesn't Austin do any chores".

(Edward enters the room)

*Edward- "Well that's preposterous, cooking and cleaning is a woman's job in the household".

*Emily- "This is a load of bullsh-

*Mrs Dickinson- "Emily!".

*Emily- "ugh fine".

As Emily walks to fetch water her head is buzzing with ideas for new poems. Her mother had requested extra water so Lavinia was told to come along.

*Emily- "If I could go to school I bet I would be able to write so much more poetry about new and amazing things!".

*Lavinia- "Emily I've told you a million times women can't go to school".

*Emily- "But why not!".

*Lavinia- "It's not our place Emily".

*Emily- "But think of the things women could accomplish if we we're just given a chance".

* Lavinia- "I don't know about that but for one I am perfectly fine with being a housewife".

*Emily- "Well I'm not".

*Lavinia- "Let's just focus on getting all this water back home".

(Meanwhile at the Dickinson household)

*Mrs Dickinson- "Edward can I have a word?".

*Edward- "yes of course, about what?"

*Mrs Dickinson- "Emily".

*Edward- "yes what about her?"

*Mrs Dickinson- "I'm worried about her, she refuses to do chores and says she doesn't want to marry!"

*Edward- "Well thats just ludicrous, how does she expect to be a good housewife if she keeps trying to live out her silly fantasies of being a writer!"

*Mrs Dickinson- "I don't know Edward, what do we do?"
