The sound caught me off guard but I didn’t let it show, at least I hoped that I didn’t anyway and I was thankful that I had Mark to occupy my attention away from my internal horror.
I turned to my green looking friend who I was surprised to see was looking better now that he had his feet back on the ground and was out of the speeding car.
I looked at him feeling instantly guilty. “I’m so sorry Mark, I swear next time no speeding”.
He gave me a look that said he didn’t believe it and I laughed. “I’ll hold you to that”. Holding his stomach and trying to look brave he let out a shaky breath.
“And I will stick to it. For a minute there I really thought that you were gonna throw up on my boy”. I glared suspiciously.
“Your boy”? He asked with a laugh.
“My precious” I squeaked, trying to do an impression hoping that he’d remember the movie we watched last night. I sighed in relief when he laughed and shook his head at me.
“Freddie missed that entire marathon, he was out like a light”.
“Hey, you fell asleep just before Arwen gave her crystal to Aragon”. I reminded – no one disses the little man!
“That part sucks and you know it, I was bored”. He shrugged.
“No you were sleepy like a little baby”.
“Whatever –“
“Lucas, where are you”? I froze, I know that – I know that voice; no, I’m being paranoid, I’m being paranoid I’m –
Just then a blonde head popped it’s way out of the door, my mother’s head to be exact. She stared at me in surprise and even a little bit of fear. Mark stiffened visibly, even my Mom knew something was off with him and she recoiled from it.
“Claire what are you doing here”? She asked shocked, though her voice was small. I was so dumbfounded and actually, a little betrayed that I couldn’t say a word even if I wanted to.
Mark ended up speaking for me. “She brought me home so I could pick up a jacket before we head out again, right Claire”?
Oh thank God for Mark! He was giving me a way out and I took it. I nodded my agreement eventually and managed to breathe again.
“Right”. I held Mark’s eyes for strength, I couldn’t look at anyone else. There were so many questions in my head and I didn’t have the desire to have any of them answered. I just want to run.
Surprisingly another voice entered the fray from the depths of the apartment. “Wait wait wait, what is going on Lucas? You know it is not polite to keep your Mother waiting”. Again my breathing stopped.
If it wasn’t an obviously womanly voice I would’ve run at the possibility of him having my Father in there too.
Quite abruptly a dark head of hair poked out from the door to reveal an equally elegant and haughty looking woman. She was well dressed in a plum coloured, long sleeved, frilly blouse and a grey pencil skirt. She looked at me and then glared at Lucas who was still looking at me wide eyed like he was afraid I was going to run for the hills.
“Son, put a shirt on you’re going to scare the poor girl.” She turned to me then with a smile on her face. “Hello sweetheart, what’s your name”?
