I somehow made it through the day to lunch but did not escape the stares that burned into my back, I mean I know that I don’t look up to my usual standard but what the hell do people want? I’m not here for them to look at am I? Am I not allowed to have a bad day like the rest of the world? What is wrong with people? I didn’t even bother going to the lunch line I’m not hungry and I’m not even interested in a drink just drowning in my own misery will do perfectly. I stalked towards my usual table not trusting myself to be alone somewhere hence putting myself through the torture of more gawping. I put my bag down and started to count the bricks in the wall behind Sam’s blond head. I got to around thirty four when Jenny sat down opposite me making me lose my number and my view.
Her eyes widened on me in disbelief “What the hell happened to you? Do you know people are starting rumours”?
“I hope they’re imaginative” I said tonelessly.
“Claire what the hell? You never look terrible ever if we weren’t friends I’d hate you for it”.
I smiled at that and shook my head. “You’re prettier promise”. She forgot about grilling me for a second smiling brightly at me.
“Really”? I nodded and was about assure her more when Mark plopped down next me smacking his tray into the table.
“Look at me”! He commanded I don’t know who he’s talking to so I didn’t move until his hand grabbed at my chin and turned my face to his.
“Excuse me hands off”!
“Well if you’d listen I wouldn’t have to use force! Do you know how many guys I had to threaten to stop talking about you”?
“What were they saying”? I asked curious.
“That you look like shit the girls were worse it’s like they’ve been waiting years to pounce on you”.
“Of course they have she’s the hottest thing in this school apart from me, it’s pent up jealousy” Sam put in giving me a saddened look truly sorry for me.
“Well thank you but I never asked you or anyone to get involved”.
“It’s called loyalty Claire you’re the only girl here who hasn’t thrown herself at me or made googly eyes at me and the only person who’s helped me since my brother let me crash at his place. You’re my friend Claire and I’m going to keep it that way”. I felt a whole new dimension of feelings for Mark in that minute respect and warmth and protective over him if anyone tries to hurt my friend they’ll be skinned alive. I hugged him finding it nice that someone was actually being nice to me instead of beating me, telling me they hate me or gossiping behind my back.
“Thank you Mark I want to stay your friend too and I promise if anyone gives you trouble they’ll have me and the bottom of my car tires to answer too”.
He chuckled into my hair “Thanks Claire”.
“It’s ok”.
“Hey guys Mr G is glaring at you” Jenny whispered I furrowed my eyebrows still hugging Mark my chin in his shoulder blade trying to think about who Mr G is. I pulled back to see Mark’s confused face too but he wasn’t looking at me he was looking at Mr Greyson, oh Mr G. I was about to say something when a girl I kind of recognised walked up to me sneering.
