Azriel P.O.V

Helion was their only possible lead. It was an unlikely lead, but the only possibility they had. He was the only High Lord that could manipulate light being the Lord of the Day Court.

He could winnow to the Human World. When he got to the barrier, he could just walk through since he was a High Lord and almost no High Fae would block a High Lord.

He could also shape-shift so it was possible he shifted into a monster to kill Jurak. There were so many what-ifs.

Every day they sat there and thought about it, Helion seemed more and more guilty. So, Rhys sent word to the other High Lords to call a meeting in the Night Court.

They had never had a meeting in the Night Court, but Rhys was ready.

Helion had not received an invitation. Rhys didn't want to alert him without damning evidence. So, Helion stayed out of the meeting.

Two weeks after Jurak's head was found, five High Lords were suddenly sitting in a room talking about this new problem.

"One of your shadows are dead," Killias said, "why are we having a meeting about it?"

"Because for this shadow to die, there had to be light thrown upon it. The head of that shadow was sent to us in a box from the Human Queens. Therefore they have committed a crime against my court," Rhysand said.

"There are still questions as to who killed that shadow," Tarquin said, "for it could not be the Human Queens who killed him."

"We have a few ideas, but nothing too concrete," Rhysand said.

"Who?" Beron said, looking intently at Rhysand. Almost too intently.

"Helion," Rhysand said and the Lord of the Dawn Court seemed to almost bristle.

Azriel saw the little sigh of relief Beron let out at the name.

Azriel didn't know if Rhysand saw it but he knew Cassian did. Azriel looked over at Cassian who looked straight back.

Maybe they were wrong about Helion. Beron's reaction to this new information planted a little seed of doubt within their minds.

"Helion?" Thesan asked, pulling Azriel's attention away from the Lord of Autumn.

Thesan seemed a little skeptical, given his history with Helion. Now Azriel was as well.

"He can manufacture light from nothing and would be able to dispel shadows to kill a shadowsinger," Rhysand said.

"But what would he gain from the mortal queens sitting on the throne of Prythain?" Killias asked.

"He does love humans, maybe he would want them to rule by his side," Beron suggested.

Azriel, who had been looking at Rhysand, suddenly returned his gaze to Beron. The idea had already been brewing in Azriel's mind but now it seemed solidified.

The High Lord of the Autumn Court. With the power to manipulate fire. What did fire create? Heat and light. Light. That could dispel shadows while he killed Jurak.

How had they been so stupid? Beron made perfect sense.

He hated humans, he probably wanted them enslaved to the High Fae again. He also hated the other High Lords and probably wanted to rule over all the courts.

Az needed to tell Rhysand. Now.

Beron P.O.V

What a fool Rhysand was. Helion?

How could Helion possibly do what Beron did to that shadowsinger?
