3 years have gone by. The two shared a bond like no other, they were partners in crime and mischief but overall, very well behaved kids. Caesar and Calliope never left one's side, whenever their mischief got them into trouble they would both take the fall. Even if one of them got into heep of trouble, it was still the same. They got each other's back through and through.
"Right away, Caesar and Calliope displayed signs of heighten intelligence. So I kept them. Brought my work home."
Caesar and Calliope bickered from time to time....to time. Like normal siblings did. Similar to now. "Open the door, you lying squishy toy! I'm gonna bake you into a pie and shove you into the oven!" Calliope banged on the door while Caesar leaned on it to prevent her from coming out.
Will sighed. He had been trying to get them to settle for a while now for their lesson. "Caesar, open the door." Caesar giggled hearing feet slapping again the wooden tiles and quickly signed, 'Okay!' the cheeky little chimpanzee moved out the way and the door was forcefully opened as his little sister tumbles, rolling on the floor.
Caesar laughed in amusement of his sister's frustrations. She got up and marched towards him but Will grabbed their arms. "Alright, you two, that's enough. Lesson time." they both groaned.
"By 18 months, Caesar and Calliope were signing up to 24 words. By age 2, Caesar and Calliope were completing puzzles and models designed for children 8 years and up. At age 3, they continued to show cognate of skills that far exceeded that of a human counterparts."
Caesar and Calliope were sat on the kitchen table as their father, Will taught them how to sign. "Home. Home." Will signs the word he just said while doing the action of moving his hand from his chin to his temple repeatedly. "Home."
Calliope did the same movements, "H-home?" she tried and the nodding approval from Will made her smile. "Good. But with more confidence." he encouraged. "Home!" Calliope said more freely. "Very good." Will looked over at Caesar who was staring intensely as something.
"Caesar, come on. Home." Will encouraged, trying to get the chimp's attention. "Home." Caesar only glanced at Will before doing the movements but kept his eyes wondering eyes from his teacher. "Very good." Will smile. Caesar reached forward and hugged him, no particular reason and Will chuckles accepting it. They were both joined by Calliope.
"Now let's try sentences." he announced pulling away from the hug. "Calliope, you go first. Can you read this?" Will gave her a piece of paper.
"I.....am...Calliope." she slowly started and felt something poking her sides but purposefully ignores it. "I...live...in San..San-" she repeats as the poking disturbed her. She snapped her grey eyes to the chimp who had his eyes on her, a knowing grin plastered on his lips as he poked her. Caesar decided to see how far could he push his sister on edge and he surely would see. "San Francisco!" she yelled and poked him back.
Before Will could even comprehend what made her burst out like that, the two siblings were caught in a raging poking match. "Hey, hey, stop it!" Will tried to separate them.
"He started it!" Calliope responded in defense.
"I don't care who started it. I'm going to finish it." Will used the classic line of the parent who didn't care about to taking sides, rather stopping the matter at hand.
"He completed the Lucas Tower in 15 moves, a perfect score. I maintain my hypothesis that A: the green in his eyes indicates that the ALZ-112 is passed genetically from mother to son. And B: that in the absence of damaged cells that need repairing, the drug in his system has radically boosted healthy brain functioning."
"And .....they play chess pretty well."
Will moved on to the diagram that showed the anatomy and abilities of mermaids which he picked on from Calliope as the years gone by. He went over as written on the computer;
"Siren Song: Capable of emitting a captivating singing voice that lures anyone who hears it towards the singer. Theory of this? She tried to imitate the little mermaid's song when her voice was stolen, bolted 'My Heart Will Go On' early in the morning and Caesar fainted. Not sure why that happened but he was okay in the end. His ear cells were a little damaged though."
"Amphibious Transformation: Able to take on an ordinary human appearance through a painful metamorphosis to blend in with modern society and varying lengths of time on land."
" Aquatic Habitations: She can survive and adapt to underwater environments including enduring high water temperatures and extreme water temperatures."
"But I don't wanna go to school!" Calliope whines as she drags her feet following Will into the bathroom. "Why do I need to go there anyway? You teach me." she tried to reason.
"Calliope, I am qualified as a scientist not a kindergarten teacher." Will stated firmly and opened the water after putting the stopper. "besides you'll have fun! Meet new people, make new friends!" smiles Will trying to encourage his daughter to put on a good mood.
"But Caesar is my friend."
"My point still stands, young lady." Will said firmly and by the look on his eyes, he was not even going to entertain the discussion any longer.
Calliope grumbled below her breath, "You are no fun!" she took off her night dress and got in the hot water that had not been made the right temperature yet. Will's eyes widened, "Cal no!" he yelled.
The young girl yelped, backing away from him at the sudden yell, "You scared me," she tried regaining her breathing as she observed his shocked state, "What?" no answer. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
"I gotta write this down!" Will recovered from his daze of shock and ran out the bathroom. "Oh come on!" Cal exasperated threw hands in the air.
"In her natural form she has different features than 'the normal mermaid' interpreted and it makes her stand out more of half human, half sea creature. Instead of teeth like the human species, they are razor sharp similar to that of a carnivore. Cupids, hence we like to call them: dagger like teeth used for catching and consuming prey."
As the years went by, Will had been conflicted on whether to let Calliope go back to the sea. But after hearing that she knew little to nothing to survive out there, the other reason being, they didn't know if there was a mermaid colony nor could they find it for that matter. So, he decided to keep her.
He did not experiment on her like his company, Gen-sys would have done, no. He studied the girl to understand her better. Fortunately for Cal, Will has quite the patience as she was a very slow learner. It was a working progress for her to even speak but signing? She nailed it pretty quickly.
"Gill slits: water passes across the gills and out the slits, allowing respiration. This type of feature is found on either sides of the torso. Talons: she has claws used for seizing and tearing prey. Syndactyly: digits are fused together forming 'webbed fingers' which reduce water resistance when swimming. Pelvic Fins: this unit assist mermaids as they move vertically or turning sharply in the water. Tail Fluke: this powerful limb is used for propulsion. Barbed stinger: a sharp piercing point stationed at the end of the tail."
"Music box: mermaids have a hybrid of a larynx and syrinx at the base of the trachea. And although this sort of ability is undergoing training, there is a 50/50 percent of chance that we don't have to keep replacing our windows for the next couple of weeks."
