That was roughly a month ago. Had someone told Calliope that her faith in this dying world would be restored by having to take in the two baby bonobos and caring for them, she would have laughed. And laughed. And laughed some more. Truth be told, taking in the two brothers gave her a breathe of fresh air. They were a sort of distraction from her haunting past in the cage and she loved that.
She learnt the oldest brother's name was, Octavius. A very charming and hyper little ape that wouldn't stay in one place. His little brother did not have a name, unfortunately.
Octavius told her, he was just born so he was still going through the process of finding a good name for him. One day, he had asked her to name his little brother because was tired of addressing him as 'little brother'. Calliope didn't feel the right place to but the bonobo insisted and she named him from her favourite cartoon as a child; Miles From Tomorrowland Mission.
Surprisingly, Octavius loved it.
As she slept with the baby laid on her chest, his arms sprawled on either sides. She felt something tickle her foot. Calliope shifted in her spot and stirred awake at the disturbance but after seeing the little ape smile innocently up at her, she let her head slumped in her pillow. "Good morning!" greeted Octavius.
"Good morning. Slept well?" he nodded eagerly. "And I suppose you remember what day it is, then?" he nods vigorously in remembrance. "We're crossing the bridge!" Octavius signed enthusiastically, jumping up and down with joy filled eyes.
Miles stirred in his sleep and gibbers softly. It took some time to get out of bed as Octavius climbed in and snuggled close to her neck for warmth and they took a short nap. When they woke again was when they started packing to leave to the bridge.
Calliope had hesitated when the little ape asked to cross the bridge and into the Redwoods. She knew what dangers lurked in that forest and she wasn't at all scared, she was more hesitant to be reminded of the memories she had with her family there. And now that they were all likely gone, she knew going in there would cause continuous stabbed wounds mentally.
Yet she took the sacrifice for Octavius and Miles. Seeing his eyes full of hope, it reminded her of the time she was small. And she did not want to take that hope away from him. Even though she had grown attached than she interpreted, she needed to let them go and search for her kind. Once she finds them, she probably will have a place in this dark cruel world.
They had found sanctuary in her abandoned childhood home. Of course, it was a stab to the gut but she could not risk being trapped in mankind's claws again.
Once they had finished packing, they left to go find a transport that will be of use. She found a nearby gas station, a guy tries to fill up his car with gas and she whispered to Octavius who hid in her navy blue trenchcoat, only peeking his little head out. They hid behind a burnt car, "Okay, I'm gonna go in the station for supplies while you wait for me in the car, alright?"
