Author's Note:

I mean no disrespect to Pachinko by writing this fanfiction. I've read it and it's amazing. I'm just a Mineun shipper, and I need to pair Hansu with a character Go Eun played.

This fic might be out of character for Hansu.

The story starting from this chapter is the product of my imagination. Please avoid if you don't like this.

Yeongdo, Busan, late 1918

Eun Gyo had always secretly envied boys and men, and the fact that she wasn't one. Men had more strength and opportunities in life, despite being poor or wealthy. They got food and work easily compared to women. They were forgiven easier, and forgot unfortunate circumstances faster. All of these she learnt pretty early in life, a daughter of a maid named Eun Hee that got seduced by her young master.

For her father she was a shame he wanted to cover. Of course her mother was kicked out of her master's house as soon as she told she was pregnant with his child. For her parents, she was a disaster they wanted to get rid of. Besides, they had no space in their tiny house, nor food to give to a young pregnant mother.

Oh, how hard life was, for a woman who had no one to turn to and seek protection from.

It wasn't surprising that the one who helped her was eventually, a woman as well.

Eun Hee found her childhood friend, Yang Jin, who married well. Her husband, Hoonie, was the owner of a boarding house. It wasn't even a big business. It was small, with only four bedrooms, and people slept together in one room. But it was decent and it continuously had boarders, even in the most difficult time.

Eun Hee begged for Yang Jin to let her work there. She would work hard and eat only a little, as long as Yang Jin let her sleep there. At the time, Yang Jin only had one help, an ahjumma who was a neighbour. She needed help with the boarding house, and she knew Eun Hee would be useful.

Eun Hee had told her honestly that she was pregnant with her young master's child. What Eun Hee didn't say but both understood was, there's no way the young master would care for Eun Hee anymore, nor give her any support to raise the child, if the child was born healthy.

So Eun Hee slept at the kitchen, and was grateful for it. Yang Jin was kind to her, and let her eat properly, although Eun Hee kept on trying to take just a quarter of what she was given and returned the less.

"I know how hard it was to lose children that grew in my own womb. The food is for your child."

Eun Hee had to run to the beach behind the house to cry, and when she was done crying, returned to the house to eat until she was full, and worked harder.
